About The Position

The EMT Trainee provides support in the delivery of emergency medical services while completing an accredited Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) training program. This role focuses on gaining foundational knowledge and hands-on experience necessary to obtain EMT certification. The Carilion sponsored EMT course requires weekly travel to Roanoke, though non-Roanoke based courses may be an option in select locations. This is a temporary position within CCPT, with employment limited to a maximum of 8 months from the EMT Program's start date. Within the first four months, the trainee must successfully complete the position orientation program, including enrollment in a Virginia Office of EMS (OEMS) Emergency Medical Technician course. If an employee becomes certified by OEMS as an EMT within the eight months, they may apply for a CCPT EMT or Communications Specialist I position, but successful completion of this temporary role does not guarantee hire into a permanent position.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Must be enrolled in or accepted into an accredited EMT training program.
  • Must be 18 years of age or older.
  • Must be eligible to obtain EMT certification upon completion of training.
  • Must successfully complete EMT training and obtain certification within a designated timeframe of 8 months from start of EMT Program.
  • Valid Virginia driver's license and driving record that meets the compliance standard of the Carilion Clinic driver eligibility guidelines required on the date of hire and during employment.
  • 2 years of clean driving history required.
  • Demonstrates ability to remain calm and effective in high-stress situations.
  • Strong communication, listening and interpersonal skills are required.
  • Proficient in computer and keyboard skills.
  • Attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Must be able to work efficiently, manage time, and follow policy and procedures with minimal supervision.

Responsibilities

  • Supports the delivery of patient care in pre-hospital and clinical settings under the supervision of certified staff.
  • Assists with patient assessment, including obtaining and documenting vital signs and observations.
  • Participates in basic life support activities and learns to recognize and respond to medical and trauma emergencies in accordance with established protocols.
  • Maintains equipment and supplies to ensure operational readiness.
  • Uses effective communication with patients, families, and members of the healthcare team.
  • Adheres to safety standards, regulatory requirements, and organizational policies.
  • Successfully completes all required training program coursework, clinical experiences, and competency validations within established timeframes.
