About The Position

This position responds to emergency and non-emergency calls, delivering EMT-2 level patient care and treatment to sick or injured persons, transporting patients, communicating to allied health care professionals, and completing medical, legal and Borough documentation. Work is performed and duties are carried out in accordance with established policies, procedures, and Borough core values: Accountability, Customer Focus, Dedication, Integrity, Responsiveness and Teamwork. Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent, and specialized training in the field of work including college courses, certificate program, apprenticeship, etc.
  • Possession of state issued EMT certification. Candidates hired without an EMT 2 certification issued by the State of Alaska must successfully complete EMT 2 training and an EMT 2 Internship provided by Department of Emergency Services within six (6) months of hire. Candidates hired without a current EMT 2 certification issued by the State of Alaska will be paid at the EMT 1 pay grade (currently starting at $24.53hr). When EMT 2 certification and internship requirements have been met, the employee's pay will be adjusted to the EMT 2 pay grade.
  • Current basic life support (BLS) certification.
  • Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver's license issued by the State of Alaska for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
  • Must be able to successfully complete a valid pre-employment background check, drug screen, pre-employment and annual physical ability test (PAT), and a post-offer physical exam.
  • Completion of Incident Command System (ICS) courses, ICS 100 and IS 700 within ninety (90) days of hire, and ICS 200 and IS 800 within one (1) year of hire.

Responsibilities

  • Assesses and provides basic, non-invasive emergency medical care including, but not limited to taking vital signs, bandaging and splinting, basic airway protection, providing oxygen to patients via appropriate devices, spinal protection and immobilization and utilizing traction devices to splint lower extremities.
  • Under the direct or indirect supervisions of a physician, may provide invasive care including advanced airways, IV therapy and medications.
  • Under the direct or indirect supervision of a physician, treats injuries and/or illness using intermediate life support techniques and medications.
  • Transports sick and/or injured patients in a variety of settings and environments, including residences, businesses, work sites, roadways, etc.
  • Provides patient assessment and treatment in accordance with State of Alaska and Mat-Su Borough EMT expanded scope of practice parameters applicable to the EMT-2 certification level.
  • Ensures appropriate continuum of patient care by communicating patient status and transferring patients to receiving facilities or other entities such as regional hospitals, specialty care centers, medevac providers, etc.
  • Ensures use of appropriate state and federal regulations pertaining to EMS including confined space, hazardous materials, incident command system, blood borne pathogens, airborne pathogens, and controlled substances.
  • Operates emergency vehicles and equipment in accordance with accepted safety standards.
  • Communicate effectively via radio or direct contact with mutual aid resources and allied health professionals.
  • Prepares and submits clear and accurate documentation of all emergency response and patient encounters.
  • Maintains all applicable apparatus, equipment, and medical supplies in readiness for emergency response.
  • When staffing the EOC performs the functions assigned by the Event Commander to efficiently and effectively respond and manage an incident.
  • Performs related duties.
