About The Position

Join our team as a variable shift, PRN, Ambulance Service Basic Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) in Canyon, TX. BSA provides 24-hour paramedic care through our ambulance service, which responds to emergencies in Canyon and 825 square miles of Randall County. BSA EMS staffs two stations 24/7/365, one in northern Randall County and one in Canyon. The position involves providing out-of-hospital emergency medical care, stabilization, and safe transport for patients experiencing medical emergencies or injuries, operating under medical oversight and within protocols approved by the Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS).

Requirements

  • Minimum 18 years of age.
  • High School (or GED equivalent) diploma.
  • Certification or licensure as an EMT-Basic by the Texas Department of State Health Services.
  • Successful completion of a DSHS-approved EMT-B course and passing of the National Registry exam.
  • BLS certification must be obtained within 14 days of hire or transfer into the role and prior to providing direct patient care.
  • Valid minimum Class C Texas Driver's License with restriction “A” permissible.
  • Completion of the following Department of Homeland Security, Federal Emergency Management Agency National Incident Management System (NIMS) courses: IS-100, IS-200, IS-700, IS-800.A is required within 80 days of employment.

Responsibilities

  • Provides out‑of‑hospital emergency medical care, stabilization, and safe transport for patients experiencing medical emergencies or injuries.
  • EMT‑Bs operate under medical oversight and within protocols approved by the Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS).
  • Respond to emergency and non‑emergency calls and assess patient condition.
  • Provide Basic Life Support (BLS), including CPR, airway management, bleeding control, and operation of basic medical devices such as oxygen delivery systems and suction units.
  • Perform interventions using standard EMT‑B equipment and follow statewide medical protocols.
  • Interview patients, family members, and bystanders to obtain medical history and incident information.
  • Safely operate an ambulance in both emergency and non‑emergency modes following traffic regulations.
  • Transport patients to appropriate medical facilities while monitoring and rendering care en route.
  • Communicate effectively with dispatchers, hospital personnel, and other first responders.
  • Complete accurate and timely electronic and written patient care reports.
  • Follow all state and local medical protocols, EMS regulations, and safety procedures.
  • Inspect, clean, and maintain ambulances and medical equipment to ensure operational readiness.
  • Maintain inventory of medical supplies and restock as needed.
  • Participate in training sessions, drills, and continuing education.
