About The Position

In 10-16 weeks, you will receive the training you need to become certified as a Nationally Registered EMT Basic, ready for state certification. This program serves as an excellent steppingstone for a life-long career in healthcare or public service. Minimum requirements include being at least 18 years old, having a high school diploma or GED, having a valid driver’s license, meeting our pre-hire requirements and being ready to make a difference in your life and in our community. Summer Class starts Monday, June 8th, 2026. Fall Semester starts Monday August 24, 2026. – apply today! Summary: Under the supervision of the Director of Clinical Services, the EMT Basic recruit will participate in assigned training and formal academic programs of instruction during the TRAA sponsored Ivy Tech EMT Basic Recruit Academy which is designed to qualify the incumbent to graduate the academy and fill the position of a TRAA EMT Basic in the field. Upon completion and graduation from the academy, the cadet will be ready to take the test to become a Nationally Registered EMT Basic who will then be eligible for reciprocity to obtain their Indiana State EMT Basic certification. After successfully obtaining state certification and completing new hire training via the TRAA field training program, the recruit will be promoted to the title of EMT Basic. This position will interact throughout the company, internally and with various external entities.

Requirements

Responsibilities

  • Prompt and regular attendance at work.
  • Must maintain a neat and professional appearance at all times in accordance with Standard Operating Procedures (SOP).
  • Responsible for adhering to all policies and procedures provided in the Standard Operating Procedures (SOP).
  • Maintain a positive and professional working relationship with other individuals within the community and EMS system.
  • Participates in daily room lectures at Ivy Tech Community College, laboratory practices, response simulations, live field exercises, clinical days, operational days, and other orientation activities to qualify incumbent for graduation from the TRAA EMT Basic Recruit Academy and promotion to TRAA EMT Basic upon being issued their Indiana EMT certification.
  • Succeeds in completing all required tests and/or certificates.
  • Maintains coursework performance averages meeting the standards set forth of the TRAA EMT Basic Recruit Academy.
  • Completes homework as assigned.
  • Develops knowledge of patient advocacy and interagency teamwork.
  • Develops skills for assessing patients and knowledge of procedures as defined by National Registry, State of Indiana, and TRAA Medical Director.
  • Develops knowledge and skills in documenting patient care and other reports appropriately.
  • Participates in the learning of operating an emergency vehicle including responding to emergency scenes and transporting patients to medical facilities.
  • Develops knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer and personal service s, which includes customer needs, meeting quality standards for services, and customer satisfaction.
  • Builds and maintains a strong safety focus and follows safety standards and practices.
  • Administer first aid treatment or life support care to sick or injured persons in prehospital settings.
  • Operate equipment, such as electrocardiograms (EKGs), external defibrillators, or bag valve mask resuscitators, in advanced life support environments.
  • Perform emergency diagnostic and treatment procedures, such as stomach suction, airway management, or heart monitoring, during ambulance ride.
  • Observe, record, and report to physician the patient's condition or injury, the treatment provided, and reactions to drugs or treatment.
  • Assess nature and extent of illness or injury to establish and prioritize medical procedures.
  • Drive mobile intensive care unit to specified location, following instructions from emergency medical dispatcher.
  • Decontaminate ambulance interior following treatment of patient with infectious disease and report case to proper authorities.
  • Administer drugs, orally or by injection, or perform intravenous procedures under a physician's direction.
  • Immobilize patient for placement on stretcher and ambulance transport, using backboard or other spinal immobilization device.
  • Coordinate work with other emergency medical team members or police or fire department personnel.
  • Maintain vehicles and medical and communication equipment and replenish first aid equipment and supplies.
  • Communicate with dispatchers or treatment center personnel to provide information about situation, to arrange reception of victims, or to receive instructions for further treatment.
  • Coordinate with treatment center personnel to obtain patients' vital statistics and medical history, to determine the circumstances of the emergency, and to administer emergency treatment.
  • Comfort and reassure patients.
  • Attend training classes to maintain certification licensure, keep abreast of new developments in the field, or maintain existing knowledge
