About The Position

The Division Chief is responsible for the daily operations of EMS including the supervision and development of division members. They direct the activities of operations to include scheduling, department operational readiness, system status monitoring, quality assurance and other operational support as assigned by Department Senior Leadership. The Division Chief will collaborate with senior leadership on the overall operation and future direction of the department to include: supply, equipment, fleet and facility requirements, budgeting, protocol and policy development, staffing levels and utilization and by staying abreast of the evolving standards of pre-hospital patient care and State and National EMS trends

Requirements

  • Five years’ experience as an EMS provider
  • Three years’ experience as a front-line paramedic
  • Current Paramedic Certification with the Kansas Board of EMS.
  • Valid Kansas Driver’s License.
  • PALS – Pediatric Advanced Life Support (within 90 days of employment)
  • Incident Command System (ICS) 100, 200, 300, 400, 700 & 800 within two years of employment.
  • Ability to apply the principles of patient care.
  • Demonstrates effective leadership skills.
  • Works effectively under pressure.
  • Basic keyboarding and computer skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively.
  • Ability to evaluate medical protocols and procedures for clarity, efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Ability to read, interpret, evaluate and complete reports for documentation.
  • Heavy Work: Occasionally exerting up to 100 lbs - constantly exerting up to 20 lbs. 51-75% of the day may be standing or walking.

Responsibilities

  • Manage safe and effective daily utilization of all assigned personnel, vehicles and equipment.
  • Responsible for scheduling, supervising, directing, and developing division members in order to perform at their highest levels and provide exceptional care.
  • Assure division personnel maintain licensure and position requirements per department and organization policies.
  • Maintain a positive work environment within the division.
  • Constantly monitor staff for any signs of excessive emotional or physical stress, provides intervention as needed. Seeks expert direction as required.
  • Minimize or eliminate any discovered ineffective or unsafe work practices.
  • Accept responsibility for all deficiencies and unacceptable work practices for assigned personnel. Deal with these events quickly and effectively and keep senior leadership appraised of these situations and seeks input when warranted.
  • Identify and analyze interdivision deficiencies and inconsistencies and works with the other Division Chiefs to assure operational practices are consistent.
  • Attend all division, department, QA and EMS Leadership meetings.
  • Collaborate with the billing team to assure all patient care reports are completed to allow for maximum reimbursement.
  • Utilize BLS crews, including emergent scene responses.
  • Assure daily availability of supplies/equipment.
  • Coordinate department actions on the scene of multi-unit, multi-casualty events within the ICS structure, routinely assigned as the Medical Branch Director.
  • Functions as a Field Paramedic only as required in order to remain aware of the current system status and to guide the deployment of resources.
  • Respond with surrounding EMS agencies to provide ALS support or assigns a Medic Unit to this role.
  • Respond to cardiac arrest situations to act as a liaison between on-scene personnel and family.
  • Act in accordance with the established mission, vision, and values.
  • Abide by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability privacy and security regulations regarding all aspects of Protected Health Information (PHI).
  • Maintain effective communication and professional working relationships with patients/clients and their representatives, team members, contractors, physicians, peers, outside agencies, and the public.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
