About The Position

1. Performs emergency medical care in accordance with Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certification. Administers additional care as indicated or directed. Reports verbally and in writing the observations and medical care of the patient in transit to receiving facility staff for purposes of records and diagnostics. Provides assistance to the receiving facility staff, as requested. Ensures compliance with infection control according to hospital policies and procedures. Assures that patient’s rights to fair and equitable treatment, self-determination, individuality, privacy and property are followed. 2. Maintains ambulance in an efficient operating condition. Ensures that the ambulance is cleaned and kept in a neat orderly condition, in accordance with local, state and federal regulations. Decontaminates the interior of the vehicle after transport of the patient with contagious infection or hazardous materials exposure. Restocks and replaces used linens, blankets and other supplies, cleans all equipment following appropriate disinfecting procedures. Checks that all equipment is ready for the next run. 3. Assists as needed in the hospital. Transports patients as requested. Assists with basic patient care needs within the scope of the EMT certification. Teaches BLS Classes on a regular basis as needed minimum of 8 classes per year (required for full time EMT.) 4. Promotes and ensures patient and staff safety in all aspects of responsibilities. Administers medications, treatments and procedures in a timely and safe manner according to physician orders and nursing policy, including appropriate performance of standard precautions, using two patient identifiers, and performing patient risk assessments every shift. Utilizes proper body mechanics, transfer/lifting techniques to minimize fall risk to patient and injury to self. Uses National Patient Safety Goals (for critical access hospitals) to ensure patient safety. Implements infectious disease controls as appropriate including isolation procedures, proper use of hand washing and gloves. Follows proper procedures for wasting narcotics and disposal of sharps and hazardous materials. 5. Complies with the state and federal regulatory requirements related to the performance of Shenandoah Medical Center’s operations and requirements of the SMC Compliance Program. Abides by Shenandoah Medical Center’s Mission, Vision and Values which are defined by SMC and are readily available throughout the organization. Follows HIPAA regulations and ensures that the confidentiality of patients’ medical, personal, financial records, employee records, and organizational records is maintained. Adheres to the Corporate Compliance Policy. Follows all Safety and Infection Control Procedures (including but not limited to: Annual In-Services for Asbestos, Emergency Evacuation, Fire Prevention, Hazardous Materials, Hazardous Waste Emergency Response, Lead, Medical Surveillance, Process Safety Management, Safety Committee) Considers the impact of regulations such as Critical Access Hospital requirements, along with Federal and State of Iowa regulations and discusses concerns appropriately to ensure compliance. 6. Performs other duties as assigned.
