About The Position

ALO is seeking a midlevel employment attorney to support our employment counseling, contract, and policy needs as we expand in the U.S. and internationally. This position is a great opportunity for an individual interested in working on a broad array of employment issues in a fast-paced, growing company. As Employment Counsel, you will play a critical role in advising on all aspects of employment law, policy, and compliance across our operations. You will work closely with ALO’s Director of Employment, HR, Retail, and Payroll teams to ensure that our company remains compliant with local, state, federal, and international labor laws, while also addressing a wide range of legal matters related to our workforce.

Requirements

  • J.D. from a top tier law school.
  • Active bar membership in California.
  • 3-5+ years of experience in employment law at a top law firm and/or company.
  • Strong working knowledge of U.S. federal wage and hour laws across several jurisdictions, with deep expertise in California employment law.
  • Practical, business-minded approach with the ability to provide clear, actionable guidance in a fast-paced setting.
  • Ability to balance many projects simultaneously and complete tasks accurately, on schedule and with minimal supervision.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Experience supporting an international workforce.
  • Retail, hospitality, or another consumer-facing environment experience is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Provide day-to-day legal advice on employment law matters, including accommodations, classification, compensation, discipline, hiring, leaves of absence, separations and workplace investigations.
  • Advise HR and Retail teams on wage and hour compliance, including timekeeping, overtime, meal and rest periods, sick time and paid leave.
  • Draft, revise and update company-wide employment policies, agreements, notices and communications to ensure alignment with legal requirements and best practices.
  • Partner with HR, Payroll, and People Operations teams to ensure compliant implementation of employment laws, policies, and programs.
  • Monitor changes in U.S. and international employment laws, with a focus on key retail markets.
  • Support the drafting and implementation of international policies and employment contracts.
  • Provide training and guidance to managers on compliance with federal, state, and local labor laws and regulations.
