About The Position

We have an exciting opportunity for a EMI/EMC Engineer - Space Exploration Avionics Systems supporting the NASA Spaceflight Programs in the area of EMI/EMC at the systems level support within the Avionics System Division EV5 Branch. The EMI/EMC Engineer - Space Exploration Avionics Systems will report directly to the Electronics and Electrical Section Manager as part of a group of 45 other Electronics and Electrical Engineers. The role involves working with other EMI/EMC engineers in support of the Avionics Division on-site at NASA Johnson Space Center, collaborating with NASA E3 Engineers, major contractors, and sub-contractors, both domestic and foreign, within their engineering disciplines. Duties include analysis, test planning, and circuit test and analysis for electromagnetic effects including EMI/EMC. The candidate will evaluate test and analysis data, technical requirements, verifications including waivers within the areas of electromagnetic interference (EMI), electrostatic discharge, corona, grounding, isolation, bonding, and harness/wiring.

Requirements

  • Typically requires a bachelor's degree in Engineering and a minimum of 1 year of experience in the field or in a related area.
  • BS degree in engineering from an accredited engineering school with an electrical focus.
  • Basic understanding of RF design, circuit theory, and electromagnetic theory.
  • Basic understanding of electrical or electronic system test hardware.
  • Sound communication and organizational skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Understanding of the five key areas which comprise most electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) problems.
  • Sound experience with space, military or commercial EMI/EMC design, test planning, execution and mitigation.
  • Sound knowledge of and experience in EMI/EMC compliance design and testing per MIL-STD-461 standards.
  • Experience reviewing schematics, PCB layouts, and mechanical designs for applying electromagnetic design mitigation.
  • Experience with filtering, bonding, grounding, and shielding methods for EMI/EMC performance.

Responsibilities

  • Support E3 test projects by developing Test Requirements, Test Plans and Test Procedures.
  • Integrate with cross-functional teams to develop, analyze, and implement EMI/EMC control strategies.
  • Witness E3 testing, providing real-time data analysis and troubleshooting.
  • Prepare update briefings to management on significant tests performed in the EMI facility.
  • Support Preliminary Design Reviews, Critical Design Reviews, and EMC analyses.
  • Support design engineers with consultation and review of electronic circuitry for EMC compliance.
  • Support projects in new modeling and simulation techniques for design and testing hardware.
  • Perform other duties as required, including attending meetings with NASA and contractors.
