About The Position

The position involves facilitating and managing the workflow of the nursing care team at VEG practices during each shift. Shift leads will work as a team to ensure 24/7 coverage and distribute the workload efficiently to maintain high standards of nursing care. The shift lead is expected to coordinate and have an overall understanding of the floor's status, promoting a supportive atmosphere among the team to ensure quality patient care, team wellness, and professional growth.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Credentialed as a veterinary technician (CVT, RVT, LVT, LVMT) in the location of the VEG practice or enrolled in the VEG Credential Support Program.
  • Veterinary technician specialist (VTS) certification preferred.
  • Strong understanding of VEG practice workflow and team communications.
  • Ability to read, speak, and hear sufficiently to understand tasks.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and professionally in person and over the phone.
  • Ability to stand for prolonged hours, kneel, and lift up to 25 kg independently.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in emergency veterinary medicine.
  • Leadership experience in a veterinary setting.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain the flow of nursing care during the shift.
  • Know the status of patients and treatments to gauge workload based on staffing levels.
  • Designate shift roles and ensure communication regarding any changes.
  • Provide on-the-floor help during shifts as needed.
  • Guide the team to use downtime productively for training and self-care.
  • Facilitate shift start and wrap-up activities, including patient rounds.
  • Coordinate team huddles with the doctor to establish focus and tone.
  • Direct patient care questions to appropriate team members.
  • Facilitate breaks for team members and keep track of break statuses.
  • Address interpersonal conflicts that arise during shifts.
  • Maintain integrity of all shifts for standard policies.
  • Communicate incidents on the floor from a team-focused perspective.
  • Determine when on-call staff needs to be utilized and coordinate with the doctor.
