Job Summary The Emergency Department Technician is responsible for receiving patients, gathering patient registration information, ordering tests, generating specimen labels, and performing phlebotomy on all patient populations. This position is part of the 1199SEIU Bargaining Unit at Cooley Dickinson Hospital. This position reports to the Nurse Manager, Emergency Department and operates within established organizational and departmental policies and procedures.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent required
  • Other Certificate/Diploma Phlebotomy required
  • Paramedic License [Massachusetts] required
  • Basic Life Support [BLS] Certification required
  • CPI training required within six (6) months of hire.
  • Ability to perform routine patient care activities under the direction of licensed nursing personnel requiring technical or on the job training such as EKG completion, phlebotomy, wound care, and vital signs required.
  • These skills are typically acquired through the completion of a certified nursing assistant and/or medical assistant program.
  • Competency in nursing assistant skills and phlebotomy skills required by the end of the orientation period or position will be forfeited.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, multitask, and handle high-stress crisis situations in a timely and effective manner required.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of medical terminology required.
  • Demonstrated interpersonal, organizational, and telephone skills required.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently, prioritize tasks, take initiative, and make independent decisions and maintain organized working conditions (even in stressful situations) required.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous ED technician experience preferred
  • Experience working with mentally ill and dually diagnosed populations preferred
