About The Position

Overview Under the direction of a supervisor, provides specialized security, fire protection, emergency medical care, and other protective services. Performs investigations and documents the results. Responsibilities of this position occur in all weather conditions and potential hazardous environments created by emergency situations. During emergency events, may be required to assume a position in the Incident Command System. Must maintain personal physical standards required to meet the potentially rigorous challenges of this position. Requirements

  • HS Diploma or GED (General Education Diploma)
  • NFPA Fire Fighter 1 certification
  • State of New Jersey EMT-B/D Certification
  • Hazardous Materials Awareness and Operations Training
  • A Professional Level CPR Certification
  • A minimum of three (3) years firefighter experience in a paid or volunteer fire company.
  • Possesses excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • A minimum of one (1) year EMT experience is required.
  • Successful completion of NFPA 1582 and 10 CFR Part 1046 Security Officer (SO) Medical Qualifications. (pre-employment requirement and periodic thereafter.)
  • Successful completion of a 10 CFR Part 1046 Security Officer (SO) psychological evaluation. (pre-employment requirement and periodic thereafter.)
  • Pass the initial mandatory drug testing and random drug tests thereafter.
  • Successful completion of PPPL Initial and Annual Agility Testing.
  • No criminal history
  • Valid state driver’s license, and a favorable driving record.
  • Must work a schedule that includes rotational shift, weekends and holidays.
  • May be required to work a twenty-four (24) hour work schedule.
  • May be required to work mandatory overtime to meet division requirements.
  • Ability to work in all types if weather conditions.
  • May be required to work at other positions (i.e. ESCC Command Officer).
  • Exercises sound judgment.

Nice To Haves

  • Incident Command System (ICS) training (desired).
  • At least one (1) year of security experience (desired).

Responsibilities

  • Security 70%
  • Patrols PPPL facilities (in vehicle or on foot) to protect employees, subcontractors, visitors and University and Government property.
  • Monitors access to PPPL facilities and restricted areas; and maintains order at special functions.
  • Enforces Property Pass Program in accordance with Laboratory requirements.
  • Enforces University and PPPL parking and traffic regulations.
  • Monitors the performance parameters of selected experimental and operational equipment to ensure proper operation.
  • Identifies equipment or systems operating outside of the specified parameters and notifies the Communication Officer.
  • Performs the responsibilities of Communications Officer.
  • Assists visitors by providing information and direction as necessary.
  • Conducts investigations of security related incidents as directed by a supervisor.
  • Effectively detains criminal offenders; generates required documented reports; may employ use of force in performance of duties.
  • Inspection of security devices, life safety items (i.e. fire doors, eyewashes, emergency showers, etc.)
  • Emergency Response 10%
  • Reports to the Incident Commander during emergency situations.
  • Responds to potentially extremely hazardous environments and may work in areas with Self Contained Breathing Apparatus for extended periods.
  • Selects and uses proper firefighting tools and equipment to control and extinguish fires.
  • Uses ladders to gain access to assist individuals from affected structures.
  • Utilizes the appropriate safety equipment, removes hazardous gases/materials from buildings and assists in determining corrective action.
  • Provides medical care including CPR and defibrillation.
  • Performs extrication operations to free individuals trapped in vehicles, elevators or structures.
  • Training 10%
  • Maintains training and certifications to meet federal, state and PPPL requirements.
  • Participates in required Physical Fitness program during duty day.
  • Inspections 10%
  • Performs tests, inspections as required, preventative maintenance and minor repair of fire rescue systems and equipment.
  • Documents result of such activities establishing the operability of the pertinent equipment.
  • Identifies deficiencies for repair.
  • Other duties may be assigned
