The Emergency Services Dispatcher position at Purdue University involves learning, training, and becoming proficient in dispatching for Police, Fire, EMS, and other university departments across the Purdue West Lafayette and Purdue Northwest campuses. Dispatchers play a critical role in receiving and prioritizing requests for assistance, whether they pertain to police, fire, medical, or university services. This role requires the efficient dissemination of information and requests, ensuring that all communications are handled with the utmost professionalism and confidentiality. Dispatchers are tasked with retrieving, processing, and entering sensitive information from various electronic sources, which necessitates a strong commitment to maintaining confidentiality and adhering to security regulations. In addition to managing incoming requests, dispatchers must possess effective oral and written communication skills, as well as excellent listening abilities to accurately handle service requests from phone calls, coworkers, and the general public. They also serve as backup emergency services activators for other agencies and are responsible for activating Purdue University’s emergency alert notifications. The position demands the ability to perform multiple tasks simultaneously while maintaining accuracy and efficiency, and overtime work is often required. The ideal candidate will have a high school diploma or GED and 0-2 years of experience in emergency dispatching. They must demonstrate good judgment, discretion, and the ability to work effectively under stress. Strong communication skills, both oral and written, are essential, along with the ability to act professionally and diplomatically in a diverse work environment. Dispatchers must also be able to work independently and as part of a team, possess cognitive map reading skills, and be proficient in Windows-based applications such as MS Word, Excel, and Outlook. Physical requirements include the ability to lift and carry up to 20 pounds occasionally. Candidates must be willing to obtain necessary certifications in IDACS, NCIC, CJIS, and EMD, and should be prepared to work a flexible schedule.
