About The Position

The Emergency Room Technician at Erie County Medical Center (ECMCC) is responsible for providing direct care to patients in need of emergency services. This role involves routine patient care, monitoring vital signs, and assisting with various medical procedures under the supervision of nursing or medical staff. The technician plays a crucial role in ensuring patient comfort and safety in a fast-paced emergency environment.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent and one year of experience as an Emergency Medical Technician, nursing assistant, or hospital aide.
  • Possession of thirty semester credit hours from a school of professional nursing or completion of a practical nursing program approved by the New York State Education Department.
  • Completion of a certificate program as a medical assistant or closely related program from an accredited institution.
  • Possession of Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification from an ECMCC approved provider within 60 days of appointment.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in a hospital or emergency care setting.
  • Knowledge of first aid techniques including cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).
  • Ability to operate various hospital equipment and MERS radio.

Responsibilities

  • Performs venipuncture and pulse oximetry, recording measurements accurately.
  • Monitors fluid intake and output for patients.
  • Conducts specimen collections and point of care testing, ensuring quality controls are completed.
  • Complies with infection control policies and procedures, utilizing personal protective equipment as necessary.
  • Obtains and records vital signs, notifying supervisors of any changes in patient condition.
  • Utilizes pain scale and appropriate interventions when providing patient care.
  • Responds appropriately to life-threatening emergencies and assists in patient care during such events.
  • Provides personal hygiene care including showers, bed baths, and grooming.
  • Assists with nutritional needs by passing and collecting trays, setting up adaptive feeding equipment, and feeding patients as necessary.
  • Cares for patients' personal items and ensures their security according to hospital policy.
  • Transports and transfers patients using wheelchairs, stretchers, or medical lifts, including from helipads.
  • Assists with patient ambulation and performs range of motion exercises as needed.
  • Performs 12 Lead ECG and greets patients, assisting with their processing.
  • Obtains medical records and performs simple treatments and dressing changes.
  • Applies TED stockings, ace wraps, and non-complicated splints as required.
  • Performs post-mortem care and assists in discharging patients from the Emergency Room.
