Job Description Summary: The Emergency Department Technician will assist licensed clinicians in the provision of direct and indirect patient care to patients in the Emergency Department by completing tasks such as phlebotomy, performing EKG’s, splinting, obtaining vital signs and assisting patients with their activities of daily living.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • CPR Certified.
  • Basic PC skills required to manage patient information and ensure effective clinical workflows and documentation in the electronic medical record.

  • One year patient care experience preferred but not required.

Responsibilities

  • Performs phlebotomy to obtain lab samples for analysis.
  • Obtains 12 lead EKG’s.
  • Performs splinting of extremities when delegated by physician/nursing.
  • Performs visual acuity, eye irrigations and equipment set-up.
  • Performs suture and staple removal, excluding facial region, from minor cuts.
  • Collects and documents patient data, i.e. vital signs, weight, procedures performed.
  • Performs continuous monitoring on 1:1 patients.
  • Follows appropriate protocols and participates as a team member for trauma, stroke, STEMI and sepsis alerts as well as resuscitation.
  • Performs duties as assigned in triage including facilitating door to EKG benchmark.
  • Performs wound care when appropriate.
  • Performs waived testing as assigned POC glucose, POC pregnancy tests, POC INR
  • May assist in cardiac monitoring, recognizing life-threatening arrhythmias and communicates immediately to licensed clinician.
  • Reports observations and condition changes to RN and/or physician in a timely manner, i.e. change in vital signs, symptoms.
  • Transports and monitors stable telemetry and non-telemetry patients.
  • Maintains professional communication with incoming EMS units.
  • Performs patient care activities as appropriately delegated by RN in a timely manner.
  • Ensures rooms are clean and ready for EMS patient upon arrival.
  • Assists in ED patient flow with nursing staff i.e. escorting patients to/from rooms, facilitating transfers/discharges .
  • Participates in hazardous materials or disaster events.
  • Effectively utilizes computer systems appropriate to area.
  • Takes responsibility for restocking department as needed.
  • Prepares patient and room for examination/evaluation.
  • Performs and/or assists the patient with activities of daily living i.e. bathing, grooming, eating, walking, etc.
  • Maintains environmental cleanliness and safety of patient rooms, unit and equipment.
  • Provides assistance to patients, visitors and nursing personnel in the Emergency Department.
  • Assists in creating the ideal patient experience through development of respectful and compassionate relationships with each patient and family.
  • May serve as patient safety champion, empowering equal responsibility for all safety guidelines among all licensed and unlicensed care givers.
  • Performs delegable other nursing tasks delegated by the Registered Nurse which include those tasks which can be performed without requiring judgement based on nursing knowledge on part of the person performing the task ; tasks in which the results are reasonably predictable; tasks which can be performed safely, according to exact, unchanging directions; tasks which do not require complex observations or critical decisions; and tasks which do not require assessment and tasks where the consequences of performing the task improperly are minimal and not life threatening.
  • Competent in the use of portable technology, using handheld wireless devices for measurement and documentation of intake and output, vital signs and point of care testing such as finger stick glucose or INR.
  • Assists hospital visitors and staff with informational needs.
  • May utilize wireless devices and technology for coordination of healthcare i.e. scheduling, flowchart documentation, nutrition service ordering .
  • May serve as a super user for Emergency Department Technicians information technology and/or preceptor for new Emergency Department Technicians.
  • Maintains supplies and equipment necessary for patient care operations.
  • Secures and handles appropriate supplies, medications, and lab specimens transported from/into and within the unit.
  • Associate is expected to all perform other duties as requested by supervisor.
