JOB SUMMARY: The Emergency Department (ED) Paramedic provides patient care services within the scope of State of Missouri Paramedic licensure and hospital-approved protocols. This role delivers technical procedures and supportive patient care in the ED in accordance with physician orders, hospital policies, and established standards of care. The ED Paramedic works collaboratively with physicians, registered nurses (RN), and interdisciplinary staff to ensure safe, effective, and timely patient care while supporting the mission, values, and objectives of the hospital. COMPETENCIES: Deliver patient care within the scope of Missouri Paramedic licensure, hospital policies, and approved Emergency Department protocols. Perform technical procedures and supportive patient care safely and effectively under physician direction as required. Assist with patient monitoring, treatments, and procedures to support timely emergency care delivery. Accurately document patient care, procedures, and interventions in accordance with hospital standards. Serve as a clinical resource to the ED team while supporting patient safety and quality care initiatives. Respond appropriately to emergency situations and changes in patient condition, communicating concerns to the care team. Maintain clinical competency and participate in required education, training, meetings, and in-service programs. Support and represent the hospital’s Mission, Vision, and Values while performing all job responsibilities. Adhere to all hospital policies, procedures, safety standards, and regulatory requirements. Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned. TECHNICAL / CLINICAL FUNCTIONS: The ED Paramedic may perform the following skills in accordance with licensure, protocols, and physician orders: Obtain and monitor vital signs Oxygen administration and BLS airway adjuncts IV/IO initiation and removal for patients of all ages Administration of IV crystalloid fluids and authorized medication infusions CPR and basic life support interventions Oral suctioning Wound care, splinting, dressing application, and suture/staple removal Specimen collection and point-of-care testing Bladder scanning, straight catheterization, enemas 12-lead ECG acquisition NG/OG tube placement and maintenance Under direct supervision of an Emergency Physician, the ED Paramedic may perform: Defibrillation Cardioversion Transcutaneous pacing Medication administration is limited to those authorized by hospital policy and within the Paramedic’s scope of licensure. PROHIBITED FUNCTIONS: The Emergency Department Paramedic may not perform the following functions, even with direct supervision or delegation: Perform initial patient assessments or history-taking Provide discharge instructions to patients or families Initiate blood products Perform intubation, LMA placement, or central line access Administer medications not authorized by hospital policy or outside approved routes Receive verbal or telephone orders from providers Provide patient handoff reports unless the primary caregiver for the majority of care Administer, monitor, or titrate continuous medication infusions (excluding IV crystalloid solutions)
