About The Position

The Emergency Department PA/NP will provide comprehensive medical care to patients of all ages within a 12-bed Emergency Department and 4-bed "Fast Track" unit. As part of the Indian Health Service (IHS) mission, the provider will be responsible for evaluating, diagnosing, and treating acute and chronic conditions for the American Indian and Alaska Native population.

Requirements

  • Education: Completion of an accredited Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner program.
  • Licensure: Must possess a current, valid, and unrestricted license in any of the 50 U.S. States, the District of Columbia, or the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico.
  • PA: National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) certification.
  • NP: American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) or American Association of Nurse Practitioners (AANP) certification.
  • Life Support Certifications: Current BLS (Basic Life Support), ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support), and PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) are mandatory. ATLS (Advanced Trauma Life Support) is highly preferred.
  • Experience: Minimum of 2-3 years of clinical experience in an Emergency Department setting is typically required for this high-acuity environment.
  • Health Requirements: Must provide immunization records (MMR, Varicella, Tdap, Flu, Hep B) and a current PPD/Tuberculosis screening.
  • Vetting: Candidates must undergo an OPM background investigation (Fingerprinting/OF-306).
  • Compliance: Must adhere to the Privacy Act of 1974, HIPAA, and IHS-specific information security policies.
  • Citizenship: Must be US Citizen

Nice To Haves

  • ATLS (Advanced Trauma Life Support) is highly preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Clinical Evaluation: Perform physical examinations and clinical assessments; order and interpret diagnostic tests (X-rays, EKGs, lab work).
  • Emergency Care: Manage acute, life-threatening conditions and provide stabilization for patients requiring transfer to higher levels of care.
  • Minor Procedures: Perform common ED procedures including, but not limited to, suturing, incision and drainage, splinting, casting, and intravenous access.
  • Treatment Planning: Formulate and implement treatment plans; prescribe medications and therapies in accordance with hospital formulary and scope of practice.
  • Documentation: Maintain timely and accurate patient records using the IHS Resource and Patient Management System (RPMS) and Electronic Health Record (EHR).
  • Patient Education: Provide discharge instructions, counseling on preventative health, and education regarding medications and follow-up care.
  • Collaboration: Coordinate with specialists, nursing staff, and social services to ensure a multidisciplinary approach to patient care.
