About The Position

UPMC Hamot is seeking an experienced, self-motivated Emergency Preparedness Specialist to join and support an established emergency preparedness program. This full-time position is primarily Monday through Friday; however, non-traditional hours may be required during emergency responses, drills, exercises, or actual events. As a member of the Emergency Preparedness Department, the Emergency Preparedness Specialist develops, directs, and delivers emergency preparedness programs in compliance with UPMC standards of practice. This role collaborates with the Wolff Center Infection Control team and ensures compliance with applicable state and federal regulatory requirements related to education and emergency preparedness activities within the healthcare setting. This position provides support across multiple programs, including: Hospital emergency preparedness Respiratory protection program Life safety program HAZMAT / Decontamination (Decon) response

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree, in a health field or Safety Science, OR at least 3 years of experience in emergency preparedness or environmental or public health and safety is required.
  • Demonstrated knowledge in MS Office Applications (Word, Excel, Power Point minimum).
  • Demonstrated knowledge and competence in the use of PPE.
  • FEMA IS 100, 200, 700 and 800 or certifications in Hospital Incident Command System training required to be completed within 6 months from start date.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with Hospital Incident Command System (HICS)
  • Experience with Hazardous Materials (HAZMAT First Receiver) response
  • Experience in a multi-institution health care setting is preferred.
  • Knowledge of health care emergency management principles including regulatory requirements, such as the Joint Commission, and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Plan, develop and direct the biological and chemical response education, training and exercise program related to front-line facilities
  • Collaborate with clinical response team (CRT) leadership and members to identify specific clinical educational needs.
  • Participate in and lead teams to review, evaluate, revise and implement clinical and education programs, processes, policies and practices across all UPMC.
  • Design and create standards of practice utilizing innovative approaches to achieve quality outcomes.
  • Maintain training equipment inventory and ensure equipment malfunctions are reported to the appropriate department.
  • Complete an evaluation of learning needs of staff and develop education processes to meet the needs.
  • Participate in programs/meetings as required and assigned
  • Design and oversee improvement activities related to the UPMC Emergency Preparedness.
  • Participate in the process to maintain training equipment inventory and ensure equipment malfunctions are reported to the appropriate department.
  • Develop in-service programs in response to staff needs and teach staff current accepted PPE and operational practices.
  • Provide staff with educational support and guidance for the implementation of emerging infectious disease program objectives.
  • Plan, develop and direct the CRT education, training and exercise program
