About The Position

The Department of Emergency Medicine at the Alpert Medical School of Brown University, through Brown Health Medical Group, serves as the academic emergency medicine practice plan for the Brown University medical community. The department provides emergency care and faculty staffing across four major hospitals in Rhode Island: Rhode Island Hospital, the region’s only Level I Trauma Center; Hasbro Children’s Hospital, the state’s only children’s specialty hospital; The Miriam Hospital, a leading community teaching hospital; and Newport Hospital, a community Magnet Hospital. Collectively, our physicians and advanced practice providers treat more than 250,000 patients each year across these four sites, serving communities throughout Rhode Island, Massachusetts, and Connecticut. As part of Brown Health Medical Group, the Department of Emergency Medicine is deeply committed to its academic mission of clinical excellence, education, and research — providing high-quality emergency care while training the next generation of emergency medicine providers. Our Mission: “To provide up-to-date, problem-based learning in the field of emergency medicine in a state-of-the-art facility, and to exceed the expected role of an emergency medicine advanced practice provider.” Program Overview: The Emergency Medicine Advanced Practice Trainee (EMAT) program is a 10-to-12-month postgraduate training experience designed for newly graduated or non-emergency medicine trained Nurse Practitioners and Physician Assistants seeking advanced preparation for clinical practice in emergency medicine. Under the supervision of Department of Emergency Medicine faculty and senior advanced practice providers, trainees gain comprehensive exposure to the full spectrum of emergency care through clinical rotations, didactic education, and simulation-based training. Trainees participate in direct patient care, weekly didactic sessions alongside Brown’s Emergency Medicine residents, and simulation-based learning to strengthen diagnostic and procedural skills in a wide range of emergency settings.
