About The Position

The Ambulance/Emergency Medical Technician (Part time) position involves providing emergency medical services while operating specially equipped vehicles. Employees are in radio contact with supervisors, paramedics, and supervising physicians. Vernon EMS operates 24/7, and part-time EMTs work six-hour shifts, which may include nights, weekends, and holidays. The work is performed under the direction of the Chief Medical Officer and EMS Supervisors, who assign tasks and review work.

Requirements

  • Must be at least 21 years old.
  • Two years of experience as an EMT.
  • Completion of high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma.
  • Current State of Connecticut EMT-Basic Certification.
  • Current certification in CPR.
  • Valid motor vehicle operator's license and satisfactory driving history.

Responsibilities

  • Regular and punctual attendance.
  • Operate specially equipped vehicles to respond to emergencies.
  • Provide care to stabilize persons with life-threatening problems resulting from trauma or other medical emergencies.
  • Participate in the provision of emergency medical treatment including extrication, splinting, immobilization, airway management, CPR, homeostasis, IV therapy, drug administration, ECG monitoring, and defibrillation.
  • Monitor and transmit assessment and vital signs information via radio or telephone.
  • Keep records of emergency calls, patient treatment, and problems encountered.
  • Maintain equipment on specially equipped vehicles in appropriate operating condition.
  • Participate in emergency training of police, fire, and EMS personnel as well as community members.
  • Conduct initial scene assessments and participate in the incident command system.
  • Assist the Chief Medical Officer with public information and education activities.
