About The Position

This is technical and paraprofessional work providing basic life support to patients at the scene of emergencies and while transporting sick and injured patients to medical care facilities. An employee in this class is responsible for working as an emergency medical team member and directly reports to the Paramedic Supervisor. This is a 'mandatory-testing' position that requires Drug Testing.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent (G.E.D.) and completion of emergency medical technician coursework.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license from state of residence.
  • Valid Florida EMT Certification.
  • AHA CPR Certification.
  • Must obtain EVOC certification during orientation process.
  • Must be certified by the Escambia County Medical Director upon employment and must maintain as a condition of employment.

Responsibilities

  • Performs pre-hospital emergency medical care and basic life support as directed by following protocols and physician orders.
  • Operates an emergency medical vehicle in non-emergency and emergency situations, including to and from emergency scene, determining most efficient route and maintaining situational awareness in order to prevent accidents.
  • Performs both medical and non-medical patient transfers.
  • Assists with patient treatment and care utilizing initial protocol treatment based on patient condition, which may include implementing automated external defibrillators, performing basic airway management, CPR, bandaging, administration of oxygen, and performing other basic life support activities.
  • Assists in loading patient and provides transportation of patient to a medical facility.
  • Assists paramedic in establishing priority for emergency care.
  • Performs work in compliance with Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), operational directives, and medical protocols.
  • Communicates calmly and effectively with patients, family members, bystanders and other emergency responders and medical staff.
  • Completes required forms and reports including patient care reports, which involves documenting medical conditions and activities applied to patients, using a personal computer.
  • Documents patient care activities and patient care information by obtaining demographic data from patients, medical conditions and/or illnesses, and current prescription use as well as other related information.
  • Maintains emergency vehicle in full operational readiness in compliance with state and division standards by ensuring that the ambulance unit has the required supplies, equipment, and related inventory as well as cleanliness and preventative maintenance.
  • Restocks the emergency vehicle with the necessary supplies and equipment.
  • Maintains contact with and communicates with dispatch personnel and/or patient receiving facilities, utilizing applicable communication equipment.
  • Secures and disposes of biohazard waste.
  • Makes up stretcher and cleans inside of vehicle after each call.
  • Utilizes all required safety measures when performing assigned job duties.
  • Attends continuing education and other programs to maintain clinical knowledge and certification requirements.
