About The Position

The Emergency Medical Technician monitors patients' cardiac activity and vital signs, ensuring accurate documentation and reporting. Handles patient registration professionally to maintain database accuracy and assist in claims processing, while following medical protocols for interventions and wound preparation. Retrieves prior ECGs for review and thoroughly records all procedures and therapies in medical records. Performs surgical preparation of wounds according to protocol. Requirements

  • Certification - Basic Life Support upon start; must either be active on the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) or possess a current Virginia Emergency Medical Technician License/Certification level B (Basic) or above.
  • Licensure - None required
  • Experience - None required
  • Education - High School diploma or equivalent

Responsibilities

  • Reviews Medical Director orders as related to disease state; Monitors and reports patients' progress towards expected outcomes and deviations to Registered Nurse.
  • Places patients on continuous cardiac monitoring while collecting, documenting and reporting patient vital signs data
  • Obtains accurate demographic, diagnosis and insurance information, following system and department operational procedures and training guidelines. Registers patients accurately, efficiently and professionally to ensure database integrity and facilitate claims processing. Concisely documents all procedures and therapies in patients' medical records.
  • Collects patient specimens following department/facility policies and procedures; assists with collecting, labeling and transporting irretrievable specimens.
  • Provides wound care according to department clinical practice standards and acts as a resource to physicians and nurses to provide patients with optimum care.
  • Obtains 12 lead ECG per physician order and provides ECG to physician for review immediately upon completion.
  • Stabilizes and immobilizes spine and fits splints properly for extremities; assesses neurovascular status after splint application and reports deviations to Registered Nurse and physician.
  • Assists with patient transport for testing, admission/discharge, interfacility and aeromedical (per policy of Operating Unit) and arranges interfacility transport from freestanding Emergency departments.
  • Maintains inventory of equipment and supplies to optimize delivery of patient care and treatment; Coordinates with materials management to ensure appropriate stock and minimize outdated stock.
  • May perform additional duties as assigned.
