About The Position

The Emergency Management Specialist (Mitigation) position is responsible for developing and implementing hazard mitigation plans and projects to reduce disaster risk across the state. The incumbent applies professional knowledge of disaster risk reduction principles, project management, and community engagement to support state, local, and tribal mitigation initiatives. The position also assesses program needs, coordinates training, and ensures compliance with federal and state requirements. This position is part of the Emergency Management career ladder, which defines criteria for initial pay and advancement based on experience and professional development.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in emergency management, Public Administration, or a related field.
  • Four years of experience in emergency management, disaster risk reduction, or related discipline.
  • Knowledge of hazard mitigation and disaster risk reduction principles.
  • Experience with project management and community engagement.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively.
  • Ability to travel occasionally within and outside the state.
  • Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement mitigation projects and plans to reduce disaster risk.
  • Conduct hazard and risk assessments and develop mitigation strategies.
  • Collaborate with local, tribal, and state partners to prepare and update mitigation plans.
  • Manage mitigation projects in accordance with applicable regulations and requirements.
  • Research and apply evolving mitigation and emergency management practices.
  • Provide technical assistance to local and tribal governments on hazard mitigation projects.
  • Support the State Emergency Coordination Center (SECC) as assigned.
