About The Position

The Emergency Management Specialist; Hazards Analyst at Argonne National Laboratory plays a crucial role in the Office of Emergency Management, focusing on comprehensive planning, preparedness, response, and recovery activities related to hazardous materials. This position involves identifying and analyzing hazardous material risks, developing response plans, and ensuring compliance with DOE and EPA regulations. The specialist will serve as a subject matter expert in hazardous materials, supporting the all-hazards emergency management program and contributing to the safety and security of the laboratory and surrounding community.

Requirements

  • Relevant experience in emergency management, hazardous materials emergency response, environmental science, or related fields.
  • Understanding of the chemical and physical properties of hazardous materials.
  • Proven communication skills, both oral and written, across all management levels.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with diverse job classifications.
  • Experience conducting training classes.
  • Ability to interpret and implement policies and procedures, producing professional reports and plans.
  • Ability to multi-task and work independently in a fast-paced environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide technical guidance under emergency conditions.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications and personal computers.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain an HSPD-12 security badge and DOE L-level security clearance.

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of the National Response Framework (NRF), National Incident Management System (NIMS), and Incident Command System (ICS).
  • Experience conducting emergency management and environmental risk assessments.
  • Familiarity with hazardous materials classification systems (e.g., GHS, NFPA 704).
  • Experience running hazardous materials atmospheric plume models (e.g., Aloha, EPICode, Hotspot).
  • Experience in hazardous materials emergency response and management.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as a hazardous materials subject matter expert for the Argonne Office of Emergency Management.
  • Support the all-hazards emergency management core program through analysis and documentation of potential hazards.
  • Identify and screen hazardous materials for emergency management planning.
  • Perform hazardous material release impact assessments and develop emergency response planning documents.
  • Assist the Emergency Management Officer in meeting regulatory requirements for hazardous materials planning.
  • Complete EPA regulatory documents, including Emergency Planning and Community Right to Know Act reports.
  • Provide hazardous materials expertise to emergency response personnel.
  • Participate in the Laboratory's Emergency Management Team, potentially working extended hours or during weekends and holidays.
