About The Position

The System Status Controller / Emergency Dispatcher (SSC/EMD) plays a vital role in coordinating emergency medical services and ensuring effective system coverage. Under the direction of the Communications Center Supervisor and Assistant Supervisor, the SSC/EMD is responsible for receiving and prioritizing requests for ambulance service, determining the appropriate level of response through the Medical Priority Dispatch System (MPDS), and dispatching emergency units using the Computer-Aided Dispatch (CAD) system. The SSC/EMD also manages System Status Control, maintaining real-time awareness of unit locations and relocating resources in accordance with the System Status Plan to ensure optimal response readiness across the service area.

Requirements

  • Current Florida Paramedic Certification or NREMT-P
  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Current or ability to obtain within 6 months: Emergency Medical Dispatcher (EMD) Certification
  • Current or ability to obtain within 1 year: Florida Public Safety Telecommunicator (PST) Certification
  • Proficient in computer operations and multitasking in fast-paced environments
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills

Responsibilities

  • Receive and process emergency and non-emergency requests for ambulance service via telephone and radio.
  • Utilize MPDS protocols to assess patient conditions, determine response priority, and provide pre-arrival instructions when appropriate.
  • Accurately enter and manage call information in the CAD system, ensuring all dispatch activities meet IAED ACE performance standards.
  • Dispatch the appropriate unit(s) to incidents within established time standards.
  • Maintain clear, concise, and professional communication with field personnel, hospitals, and partner agencies.
  • Monitor system status and relocate units in accordance with the System Status Plan to maintain effective area coverage.
  • Direct and coordinate resources during large-scale or mass casualty incidents under supervisory guidance.
  • Maintain operational awareness and adapt to rapidly changing priorities or conditions in real time.
  • Perform Medical Radio Channel Operations as needed.
  • Provide exceptional customer service while interacting with the public, field personnel, and agency partners.
  • Exhibit professionalism, empathy, and composure during high-stress or emotionally charged situations.
  • Communicate effectively and courteously with residents, public officials, and government agencies as necessary.
  • Support teamwork and contribute to a positive, professional work environment.
  • Maintain compliance with all applicable local, state, and federal regulations, including Pinellas County, HIPAA, CJIS Level II background screening, and ambulance service agreements.
  • Adhere to all organizational policies, standard operating procedures (SOPs), and best practices.
  • Participate in training, quality improvement initiatives, and continuing education as required.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by Communications Center leadership.
