About The Position

The Emergency Department Technician is an unlicensed caregiver working under the direction of the Registered Nurse. This position is responsible for supporting the Emergency Department to maintain smooth, effective communication between healthcare practitioners, departments, patients, and visitors. The Emergency Department Technician position is accountable for the accurate, timely documentation in the patient medical record. Ensures prompt, timely assistance which contributes to the patient’s progress towards discharge. This role is accountable for patient admission, transfer, discharge flow processes, and for providing the most basic of patient care, including data collection, personal hygiene, vital sign measurement and assistance with activities of daily living. Orange Coast Medical Center Emergency Department is a cardiac/STEMI and thrombectomy-certified stroke receiving unit serving a diverse community. This position is responsible for providing patient care in a safe and effective manner in a dynamic, multidisciplinary team. Working under the direction of the Registered Nurses, the Emergency Department Technician assists the Emergency Department team in routine and acute care, transfer and transport of patients, splint application, wound care, and performing EKG testing.

Requirements

  • One year of experience in an acute care setting preferred.
  • One year of acute care experience as unit secretary/nursing assistant/ monitor technician or nursing student who has completed the first semester of nursing school preferred.
  • Basic computer skills preferred.
  • Proficient in verbal and written English preferred.
  • Current American Heart Association Basic Cardiac Life Support (BLS) card required
  • Emergency Medical Tech License or Certified Nursing Assistant preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Demonstrates knowledge of clinical and information technology systems.
  • Demonstrates knowledge and understanding of patient privacy rights.
  • Maintains confidentiality of all medical, financial, and other sensitive material in printed, electronic or verbal form, which may jeopardize the privacy of patients and or employees.
  • Manages and acknowledges patient-family-significant other expectations to create positive experiences.
  • Contributes to an effective, clean and safe working environment.
  • Demonstrates tact, sensitivity and discretion in order to maintain good relations with others.
  • Demonstrates the ability to integrate knowledge of job specific competencies.
  • Follows directions and communicates with the registered nurse and other members of the healthcare team in an organized, clear and timely manner.
  • Collects and documents information pertinent to the patient’s status in the patient’s electronic medical record and notifies the registered nurse of changes in patient’s condition.
  • Performs clerical duties related to admission, discharge and documentation of patient information in the Emergency Department.
  • Demonstrates the ability to safely maintain and competently use equipment in the delivery of patient care.
  • Demonstrates the ability to perform assigned activities/tasks/interventions safely and competently according to hospital standards.
  • Ability to be at work and be on time.
  • Ability to follow company policies, procedures, standard work and directives.
  • Ability to interact in a positive and constructive manner.
  • Assists with orientation and onboarding of new employees in a positive and constructive manner.
  • Ability to prioritize and multitask.
