About The Position

The ED Tech functions primarily in direct patient care, demonstrating competent clinical practice with a variety of patients. This role is part of a team focused on providing patient-centered, timely care in a safe and friendly environment. The tech offers individualized compassionate care to emergency department patients, observation patients, and outpatients under the direction of a physician and RN. This position involves pleasantly providing nonjudgmental care for both acutely ill and non-acute patients. It requires performing multiple ancillary roles including, but not limited to, duties and procedures within scope of practice, specimen collection, vital signs, stocking supplies, cleaning, patient transportation, clerical responsibilities, lab collection, and respiratory treatments. The tech assists nurses, physicians, and other team members to provide relationship-based patient-centered care, working with sophisticated equipment and various patient types in a friendly and often stressful environment.

Requirements

  • BLS: Basic Life Support certification (within 1 month of hire or transfer, from AHA).
  • PCT: MMH PCT/CNA/EMT/LPN Certification (Must hold an internal MyMichigan Health Patient Care Technician certification or a current State of Michigan registry document as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) or completion of Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certification culminating in licensure in the state of Michigan or completion of an accredited Licensed Practical Nurse program culminating in licensure in the State of Michigan or successful completion of one semester of nursing clinical education by an Accredited Registered Nurse Program. Effective 11/22/2019, Medical Assistant with Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) through American Medical Technologist (AMT), Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) through American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA), OR equivalent Medical Assistant Credential such as Certified Clinical Medical Assistant CCMA, etc. For current PCT’s with an expired CNA certification, EMT certification, or a lapsed LPN license, an opportunity to achieve an internal MyMichigan Health Patient Care Technician certification will be offered).
  • TEAM ADVANCED: Techniques for Effective Aggression Mgt (within 6 months of hire or transfer; employees in position on or before 8/1/2024 have 24 months).
  • NIMS IS 100: NIMS IS 100 Introduction Incident Command System (within 6 months of hire or transfer).
  • NIMS IS 700: NIMS IS 700 Introduction National Incident Mgt System (within 6 months of hire or transfer).
  • High school education with General Studies specialization.
  • Organizational skills needed to prioritize workload.
  • Interpersonal skills needed to communicate successfully with individuals and groups and interact with people at all levels to communicate ideas and concepts in a clear and understandable manner.
  • Knowledge, ability, and competence in treating patients who range in age from pre-natal to 100+ years.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain a friendly customer-oriented attitude at all times as part of a multidisciplinary team, providing the best possible care to MyMichigan Health’s patients, families, visitors, staff, community members, and any other person encountered.
  • Treat every person encountered with non-judgmental kindness, compassion, respect, and relationship-based care.
  • Follow direction from RN to provide services as prescribed by the physician’s authorized plan of care and accepted standards of evidence-based practice within the tech’s scope of practice.
  • Provide direct patient care including minor treatments, answering call lights, assisting with transfers, responding to alarms, and other duties as assigned.
  • Report effectiveness of treatment plan to the RN and make suggestions or participate in updating/revising the treatment plan in collaboration with other team members, utilizing current information to improve patient care.
  • Be knowledgeable and compliant with all local, state, and federal regulations and guidelines.
  • Maintain knowledge of MyMichigan Health and ED specific policies and procedures relating to the care provided, and maintain professional standards.
  • Demonstrate awareness of specific safety concerns in department.
  • Demonstrate competency in Infection Prevention and Control Practices and Policies.
  • Comply with MyMichigan Health safety guidelines.
  • Maintain department equipment as necessary.
  • Identify and communicate concern regarding unsafe conditions or equipment promptly.
  • Participate in medical center safety drills.
  • Utilize appropriate lift equipment on a routine basis.
  • Attend education days.
  • Seek opportunities for self-education and enrichment while sharing information with co-workers.
  • Collect vital signs and weight.
  • Participate in direct patient care.
  • Move, lift, and transport patients as required.
  • Perform intravenous access as ordered and when within scope, in a prompt accurate manner.
  • Perform other clinical and technical aspects of care in accordance with established policies.
  • Recognize and display pleasant, friendly and cooperative manner to public.
  • Maintain clean and tidy exam room, including inventory of room supplies.
  • Maintain orderly patient flow.
  • Clean equipment.
  • Be familiar with cardiac monitors, apply leads and operate equipment.
  • Assist with emergency equipment and procedures under the direct supervision of the RN or ED physician.
  • Complete documentation as required.
  • Follow sterile technique during set up and throughout procedure.
  • Assist physicians with all types of procedures.
  • Support the mission, goals, policies, and standards of the ED.
  • Assist RN to ensure patient care outcomes and safety needs are met.
  • Communicate identified problems to appropriate personnel and implement actions to assure patient needs are met.
  • Assist unit in maintaining the area according to Joint Commission standards.
  • Participate in quality improvement activities in the department.
  • Perform all clerical duties.
  • Answer telephone.
  • Enter labs and other orders as requested.
  • Assist with all medical procedures and minor surgery.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of sterile technique.
  • Maintain Health Care Provider certification (as applicable).
  • Perform according to procedure in all medical center emergency situations.
  • Provide and ensure safe and secure environment for the patient.
  • Be familiar with all safety and emergency procedures.
  • Observe fall safety precautions.
  • Assist with ordering as indicated, including ordering from purchasing weekly for medical supplies, lab supplies and office supplies, special invoices for supplies not available in storeroom, and placing orders with Pharmacy.
  • Stock exam room with supplies and fill hand cleaner bottles.
  • Possess an understanding of infection prevention and control measures designed to prevent the spread of infectious diseases.
  • Maintain the standards of the infection prevention and control policies.
  • Implement and maintain isolation techniques per policy.
  • Follow hand hygiene policies and utilize personal protective equipment as required.
  • Demonstrate competency in Microsoft Windows.
  • Be responsible to work on-call, as scheduled.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned.
