About The Position

Assists the professional staff with the delivery of services to patients in a variety of settings. Provides direct patient care, and/or one to one observation to selected patients under the supervision of a Registered Professional Nurse. Assists, escorts and transports patients. Responsibilities A. Clinical/Technical/Service Assists the professional staff with the delivery of services to patients in a variety of settings Provides direct patient care, including all vital signs, pulse oximetry and assist with ADL. Performs Patient observations: Safety and Constant/One to One observation to selected patients under the supervision of a Registered Professional Nurse Assists, escorts and transports patients Performs and assists with designated procedures, using aseptic technique as indicated Assists with patients’ examinations Obtains and provides nourishment for patients Provides minor treatments as directed - dressings, application of ace bandages, applications of slings and ice, pediculosis Assists with application of casts and splints Prepares, adjusts and teaches the use of crutches and canes Is cognizant of the need for safety devices; applies or assists with application Collects specimens, performs venipunctures and fingersticks for blood glucose Obtains EKGs as ordered Assists patients to get needed services by communicating those needs to the nurse Communicates information to patients, families and visitors Provides post-mortem care Sets-up, stocks, and maintains examining rooms Performs eye irrigations Maintains BCLS certification as required by EMS standards Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care, based on physical, psychosocial, educational, safety, and related criteria, appropriate to the age of the patients served in assigned area Age Specific Competencies (Neonate/Infant, Pediatric, Adolescent, Adult, Geriatric) Identifies physical, behavioral and emotional characteristics typical for the age group Modifies approaches based on patient age-specific needs and responses to treatment Provides care for patients based on age-specific needs Uses communication techniques which are age appropriate B. Organizational/Managerial Participates in the Department of Nursing Quality Improvement Program/activities Maintains patient/employee confidentiality in the management of information C. Educational/Professional Development Participates in the development of other staff members Meets regulatory, licensure and annual health assessment requirements D. Communication/Relationships Demonstrates a professional, courteous, and respectful attitude in dealing with patients, families and significant others Displays courtesy, tact and patience during interactions with all members of the hospital staff and extended community Adheres to Mount Sinai Morningside/West legal and ethical standards May be required to perform other duties as assigned Items 1-25 are essential functions of this position under the Americans with Disabilities Act

Requirements

  • Graduate from an approved Medical Assistant Program or equivalent.
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Ability to read, write and comprehend English.
  • American Heart Association BLS Certification

Nice To Haves

  • Associate degree desirable.
  • Medical Assistant experience preferred
  • Spanish speaking preferred
