About The Position

Assists with basic patient care based on individual patient needs within the scope of practice under direct supervision of the registered nurse. Maintains environment that is prepared for patient care.

Requirements

  • High School graduate or equivalent.
  • Current BLS Certification.
  • Able to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing.
  • Basic computer knowledge.
  • Normal hospital environment. Continuous exposure to biological hazards. Frequent exposure to unpleasant fumes and odors. Close eye work. Hearing of normal and soft tones. Distinguish smells; distinguish temperatures by touch and proximity. Frequent sitting, standing, walking, bending, stooping, and reaching. Lifting up to 100 pounds. Carrying up to 40 pounds. Pushing/pulling up to 350 pounds.

Nice To Haves

  • Preferred one (1) year experience in acute hospital setting or in ambulance.
  • Additional languages preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Takes, documents and reports vital signs. Reports abnormal results immediately to registered nurse.
  • Takes height and weight measurements.
  • Places ECG electrodes and attaches ECG monitor correctly.
  • Assists with setting up oxygen per instructions.
  • Assists registered nurse and physicians with assessments, examinations and treatment.
  • Records I&O, collects specimens.
  • Notifies appropriate licensed staff when patient complains of pain.
  • Observes, documents and reports patient condition and changes in condition to the registered nurse.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and the skills necessary to provide age-appropriate care to the patients served. Able to interpret data about the patient’s status in order to identify each patient’s age specific needs and provide care needed by the patient group.
  • Performs other duties as inserviced, including crutch walking, dressing changes and assisting physician with splint or cast application.
  • Performs and assists with technical skills as defined in scope of practice.
  • Receives and carries out instructions accurately and promptly. All patient care activities are delegated and supervised by the registered nurse.
  • Transports patients, as necessary. Assists with moving, ambulating and lifting patients.
  • Documents patient care performed, including vital signs, bedside care and observations.
  • Adheres to hospital policy addressing standard precautions, safety regulations and guidelines.
  • Communicates in an effective and efficient manner with all documentation, and with all co-workers, patients, visitors and physicians.
  • Responds to patient and visitor questions and needs immediately and within established standards.
  • Maintains patient comfort and privacy.
  • Performs all aspects of patient care in an environment that optimizes patient safety and reduces the likelihood of medical/health care errors.
  • Supports and maintains a culture of safety and quality.
  • Maintains and prepares rooms between patients and procedures.
  • Assists with preparation of equipment for procedures.
  • Monitors stock and restock supplies as needed.
  • Maintains policies and procedures established by the department.
  • Participates in performance improvement activities.
  • Assists in cost containment through the appropriate ordering and conserving of supplies and equipment.
  • Demonstrates ability to work effectively as a multidisciplinary team member; supports and assists team members in all activities.
  • Enhances professional growth and development through participation in educational programs, current literature, in-services meetings and workshops; shows responsibility for ongoing education.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned or requested.
  • Meets dress code standards for the department; appearance is neat and clean.
  • Completes annual education requirements.
  • Maintains patient confidentiality at all times.
  • Maintains regulatory requirements.
  • Reports to work on time and as scheduled.
  • Wears identification while on duty; uses computerized punch time system correctly.
  • Represents the organization in a positive and professional manner in the community.
  • Attends annual review and department in-services as scheduled.
  • Attends 12 staff meetings; or reads and returns all staff meeting minutes.
  • Actively participates in the department’s continuous quality improvement (CQI) activities.
  • Complies with all organizational policies regarding ethical business practices.
  • Communicates the mission, ethics and goals of the facility as well as the focus statement of the department.
