Under direct supervision of the physician and/or designee, assists in examination and treatment of patients. The position involves performing within the scope and training of the EDT, and consistent with State/Federal regulations including EMTALA, HIPAA and other applicable regulations, including patient confidentiality and risk management. The role requires the provision of competent patient care for all ages, acuities, and conditions in the population the facility serves, ensuring age-specific care and responding to cultural needs of patients and families. Clear and courteous communication with all members of the healthcare team is essential, following lines of authority as appropriate. Proficiency in English for effective oral and written communication with co-workers and other healthcare team members is required. Duties must be completed with regard to safety practices and policies, including infection control, workplace safety, and management of aggressive behaviors. The position also requires demonstrated proficiency in the use of computers and telecommunications for documentation, tracking, and conveying information. Maintaining required certifications and continuing education requirements per department and facility standards is necessary. Establishing priorities based on essential patient needs and available unit resources of time, personnel, equipment, and supplies is crucial. Documentation of patient care and unit activities must be timely, accurate, and concise. The role involves demonstrating awareness of and sensitivity to patient/family rights, cultural and ethical beliefs, and participating in ED staff meetings, in-services, and performance improvement activities. Effective working relationships with members of the healthcare team, patients, and families must be established. Dependable attendance to scheduled shifts and required staff development is expected, along with flexibility in the resolution of staffing issues. The position includes assisting with rooming and undressing of patients at the direction of the RN, obtaining, recording, and reporting vital signs, EKGs, heights, weights, and inputs/outputs of patients as directed and per department policy. Assisting physicians and nurses with various procedures, including positioning and setup of draping and prepping, applying monitoring devices, preparing patients for suturing, and performing wound cleaning, application of dressings, orthopedic devices, splints, and crutch fitting is also part of the role. The position requires assisting patients to/from the bathroom, in general ambulation, and transporting patients as needed. The role includes assisting the healthcare team in emergency situations, including resuscitation, and assisting with the discharge process under the direction of a physician or nurse. Cleaning ED gurneys and equipment for efficient provision of care, ensuring patient belongings are collected, bagged, and tagged with a belonging checklist filled out, and providing post-mortem care are also responsibilities. Preparing requisitions for lab, imaging reports, and medical records, conducting pharmacy, lab, nutrition, and imaging pick-ups and deliveries, including specimen transport, is required. The position involves inventorying, ordering, unpacking, and distributing supplies, forms, and linens, as well as being responsible for cleanliness, stocking, and organization of patient care areas, utility, and storage rooms. Following facility infection control policy, cleaning and processing instruments, and performing quality control checks of urine dipsticks (as applicable per facility) are also part of the job. The role requires knowledge and ability to implement community resources, pull charts from the file room as necessary, and properly fill out after-hours admission paperwork. The position includes performing receptionist duties, which involve proper cash handling, customer service, greeting patients, and properly filling out paperwork as well as identifying patients. Proper body mechanics when transporting patients to the floor or another department, and the use of proper lift techniques in certain circumstances are also necessary. Other related duties may be assigned as necessary.
