About The Position

The ED technician is a non-professional staff member who provides evidence based care to patients under the immediate supervision of the ED Registered Nurses and under the ED Unit Director’s supervision. This care is provided in accordance with a plan of care that is prescribed by the physician, and implemented by the Registered Nurse. Requirements

  • Visual acuity enabling observation of patients and using documentation tools.
  • Auditory acuity to perceive verbal communication from patients and staff and to operate equipment needed for patient evaluation.
  • Manual dexterity of hands and feet to ambulate for 8-12 hours per shift, and manage multiple pieces of equipment/tubes and invasive line.
  • Must be able to follow verbal and written instructions.
  • Possess assertive customer friendly communication skills to convey information in person and via telephone.
  • Possess an interested and empathetic attitude toward caring for the patients and families seeking care and services at the GAHHS ED.
  • Physical strength to perform CPR (bed/floor), lift push/pull 60-300 pounds (with assistance) as often as 20 times per 8-12 hours shifts and perform constant walking, twisting, turning, stretching maneuvers in patient care and use of patient care equipment.
  • Physical strength to perform the following lifting tasks: Floor to waist - 40 pounds 14” to waist - 50 pounds Waist to shoulder - 20 pounds Shoulder to overhead - 10 pounds Carry 40 pounds 30 feet Push 40 pounds/force 30 feet Pull 40 pounds/force 10 feet Carry 20 pounds away from body 30 feet
  • Must demonstrate judgment/decision making skills needed to determine if assistance is needed for lifting or repositioning patients.
  • Communication/speaking/enunciation skills to receive and give information in person and by telephone.
  • Emotional stability conductive to dealing with a high stress level of up to 12 hours at a time associated with caring for acute patients/significant others, fast paced physical activity, rapidly changing patient conditions, emotional demands of patients and their families, and demands of maintaining effective working relationships with peers, managers, physicians, and other health care workers.
  • May be certified by the Illinois Department of Professional Regulation as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA), may be licensed by the Illinois Department of Public Health as an Emergency Medical Technician. At minimum must have successfully completed the first semester of an accredited nursing program with current enrollment.

Responsibilities

  • Provides placement of patients in an appropriate exam or treatment room.
  • Obtain initial age appropriate vital signs, including pulse ox; height and weight (stated for adult, actual for pediatric).
  • Assists patients in necessary preparation for exams, placing in exam gown when appropriate for exam, or exposure of injury.
  • Performs documentation duties in a timely, accurate and concise manner.
  • Collects data regarding patient care needs and communicates this verbally to primary RN.
  • Prepares and provides instructional material for patient’s discharge as instructed by nurse.
  • Demonstrates awareness and sensitivity to patient’s/significant other’s rights, as identified by Patient’s Bill of Rights.
  • Posse an empathetic and professional attitude toward caring for the ill or injured patient, regardless of race, creed, gender national origin or payment source.
  • Functions with an awareness of safety issues, identified by the institution’s safety policies and procedures.
  • Performs efficiently and calmly in emergency situations following established policies and protocols.
  • Demonstrates sound knowledge base and action in decision making and care of designated patient populations.
  • Attends educational seminars to update knowledge base of applicable standards of care for emergency department patient populations.
  • Participates in staff development, orientation, and performance improvement activities of the unit.
  • Communicates professionally with all healthcare team members, patients and significant others.
  • Cooperates with flexible staffing patterns, participating in temporary assignment measures when required by the Division of Nursing.
