Requirements

High school diploma or equivalent required
Completion of a certified Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) or Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) program preferred
Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required
Advanced certifications (e.g., ACLS, PALS) preferred or as required by facility
1–2 years of experience in emergency, acute care, or patient care settings preferred
Previous experience as a nursing assistant, EMT, or clinical technician is advantageous

Responsibilities

Assist with patient intake, vital signs, and initial assessments
Prepare patients for exams, procedures, or diagnostic tests
Monitor patient conditions and report changes to nursing staff
Perform basic clinical procedures such as wound care, splinting, or EKGs, as trained
Assist on the hospital floor with patient care, answer call lights, phones, assist patients with basic cares, etc.
Specimen collection including urine, stool, and sputum
Phlebotomy (after competency completion)
Act as a backup for the CNA staff and cover breaks
Transport patients to and from the ER, imaging, or other departments
Restock supplies and maintain clean, organized treatment areas
Assist with equipment setup and maintenance
Support triage process by gathering patient information and history
Follow infection control protocols and standard precautions
Maintain confidentiality of patient information (HIPAA compliance)
Report on unsafe conditions or incidents to nursing or supervisory staff
Work closely with nurses, physicians, and other ER staff to ensure smooth patient flow
Communicate patient needs, changes, and concerns promptly
Answer phone calls, admit patients via computer
Notify Ancillary Staff when needed (Lab, Radiology, Respiratory)
Provide support and reassurance to patients and families
