About The Position

The ED Tech functions primarily in direct patient care, and demonstrates “competent” clinical practice with a variety of patients. The tech in the ED works as part of a team with a common goal of offering patient centered, timely care, in a safe and friendly environment. The tech in this position offers individualized compassionate care to emergency department patients, observation patients, and outpatients based on the direction of the physician and RN. The tech pleasantly provides nonjudgmental care for the acutely ill, as well as the non-acute patient. This position requires the ability to perform multiple ancillary roles including, but not limited to, performing duties and procedures within the scope of their practice as assigned, specimen collection, vital signs, EKG’s, stocking of supplies, cleaning, and transportation of patients, clerical responsibilities, lab collection, respiratory treatments, and other duties as assigned. This position requires assisting the nurse, physician, and other members of the team to provide relationship based patient centered care. The tech in this role works with multiple types of sophisticated equipment and handles various types of patients in a friendly and frequently stressful environment.

Requirements

  • BLS: Basic Life Support (Within 1 month of hire or transfer, AHA)
  • PCT: MMH PCT/CNA/EMT/LPN Certification (Must hold an internal MidMichigan Health Patient Care Technician certification or a current State of Michigan registry document as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA), or completion of Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certification culminating in licensure in the State of Michigan, or be certified or registered as a Medical Assistant (MA) in the State of Michigan, or be a nursing student who is currently enrolled in an accredited nursing program and has successfully completed the first semester. For current PCT's with an expired CNA certification, EMT certification, or a lapsed LPN license, an opportunity to achieve an internal MidMichigan Health Patient Care Technician certification will be offered)
  • TEAM ADVANCED: Techniques for Effective Aggression Management (Within 6 months of hire or transfer (Employees who are in this position on or before 12/31/2023 will have 24 months to complete this certification))
  • NIMS IS 100: NIMS IS 100 Introduction Incident Command System (Within 6 months of hire or transfer)
  • NIMS IS 700: NIMS IS 700 Introduction National Incident Mgt System (Within 6 months of hire or transfer)
  • High School Diploma or GED (General Studies)
  • Organizational skills needed to prioritize workload.
  • Interpersonal skills needed to communicate successfully with individuals and groups and interact with people at all levels to communicate ideas and concepts in a clear and understandable manner.
  • This position must show knowledge, ability, and competence in treating patients who range in age from pre-natal to 100+ years.

Responsibilities

  • The tech as part of a multidisciplinary team, maintains a friendly customer oriented attitude at all times. It is expected that all team members will work together to provide the best possible care to MyMichigan Health’s patients, families, visitors, staff, community members, and any other person that is encountered while representing MyMichigan Health. It is expected that at all times the tech will treat every person they encounter with non-judgmental: kindness, compassion, respect, and relationship based care.
  • Follows direction from RN to provide services as prescribed by the physician’s authorized plan of care and accepted standards of evidence based practice that is within the tech’s scope of practice. Provides direct patient care including minor treatments, answering call lights, assisting with transfers, responding to alarms, and other duties as assigned.
  • Reports effectiveness of treatment plan to the RN and makes suggestions or participates in updating/revising the treatment plan in collaboration with other team members, utilizing current information to improve patient care.
  • The tech is knowledgeable and compliant with all local, state, and federal regulations and guidelines. The tech maintains knowledge of MyMichigan Health and ED specific policies and procedures relating to the care provided, and maintains professional standards.
