Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago Job Description General Summary: The Emergency Department Partner (EDP) is a health care professional whose primary focus is to respond to, assess, and triage emergent, urgent, and non-urgent requests for medical care; apply basic and advanced knowledge and skills necessary to determine patient physiologic, psychological, and psychosocial needs; administer medications, interpret and use diagnostic findings to implement treatment; provide complex care; and facilitate access to higher levels of care when the needs of the patient exceeds the capability level of a licensed paramedic. As an integral member of the Emergency Department care team, the EDP will understand and integrate into the patient care needs of neonatal, pediatric, adolescent and adult patients in regard to the patient’s growth and development process. The EDP will perform job functions adhering to service principles with customer service focus of innovation, service excellence and teamwork to provide the highest quality care and service to our patients, families, co-workers and others.

Requirements

  • High school graduate. Graduate of IDPH or NREMT-P approved Paramedic program. Associate or bachelor degree preferred.
  • Minimum two years experience in Emergency Medical Services or Hospital Emergency Department setting. Demonstrates an ability to cope and function in stressful situations.
  • Certification/Licensure: Illinois Department of Public Health EMT-P. Employee must submit a letter of good standing from an Illinois Department of Public Health IDPH approved EMS system. Within the first year of employment Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), certifications must be obtained.
  • Provides a safe, non-threatening environment for patients and their families. Demonstrates ability to handle multiple tasks without disruption of patient care. Collaborates with team members and allied professionals in the interest of patient care.
  • Recognizes own assets and limitations, participates in self-evaluation, and is accountable for professionalism.
  • Ability to demonstrate critical thinking skills, accepting of change, demonstrate adaptability. Must possess the skills and judgement necessary to implement medical plan of care, clinical interventions and procedures as needed for the patient.

  • Demonstrates a thorough understanding and work knowledge of all equipment necessary to perform job functions. Willingly/independently accepts additional responsibilities. Anticipate alteration in the environment, which may impair safety.

  • Pediatric Education for Pre-hospital Professionals (PEPP), Advanced Pediatric Life Support (APLS), Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP/NALS), Pediatric Pre-hospital Basic or Advanced Trauma Life Support (BTLS/PHTLS) are recommended.

Responsibilities

  • Performs assessments utilizing a variety of assessment methods and/or area-specific tools.
  • Performs patient care according to procedures/protocols. Anticipates impending emergent situations and intervenes effectively.
  • Communicates with the family and members of the multidisciplinary team to identify health care needs. Communicates changes in patient status. Utilizes appropriate resources for referral or consultations.
  • Keeps up to date in Emergency Medical Services (EMS) National scope of practice by utilizing current EMS and healthcare literature for information and problem solving.
  • Evaluates the patient’s progress through continuous observation and assessment of responses to interventions, treatments, and therapies. Recommends revision in the care plan according to changes in patient needs.
  • Incorporates current hospital and departmental quality initiatives into daily activities.
  • Adheres to communication, service excellence and professional image standards that support the hospital mission and philosophy.
  • Works cooperatively as a team member to foster achievement of unit/hospital goals.
  • Identifies learning needs and seeks resources to advance EDP practice and achieve professional goals.
  • Performs job functions adhering to service principles with customer service focus of innovation, service excellence and teamwork to provide the highest quality care and service to our patients, families, co-workers and others.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of pertinent aspects and competency with protocols related to the use of chemical disinfection, high level disinfection, and sterilization if required as part of the responsibilities of the role.
  • Non-Inpatient Emergency Assessment and Response (NEAR) team; respond, assess, and treatment non-inpatients patients utilizing Basic Life Support (BLS) Services, escalating to Advanced Life Support (ACLS) Services or Code Blue as necessary.
  • Code Blue Team responder.
  • Decontamination Team first responder; will initiated the Decontamination Response Plan as to not delay patient care until the Decontamination Team arrives.
  • Integral member of the Trauma Response Team.
  • Other job functions as assigned.
  • Assist with the education and training of EMT students, registered nurses, medical students, residents and other trainees.
  • Excluding endo-tracheal intubation, maintains airway, applies oxygen, suction, nasal and oral airway adjuncts, provides ventilation using self-inflating bag-valve-mask
  • Assists with endo-tracheal intubation and ventilation
  • Provides CPR
  • Administers albuterol and ipratropium bromide inhalation medications in accordance with the ED Asthma Algorithm.
  • Controls bleeding
  • Applies CAT Tourniquet or Quick clot when appropriate.
  • Utilizes automated external defibrillator
  • Under direct supervision of an Emergency Department Attending Physician, performs external defibrillation and intraosseous needle insertion.
  • Initiates peripheral intravenous line access and performs phlebotomy with the administration of 1% buffered lidocaine via jet injection (J-Tip®) in accordance with the “Standing Medical Orders” Emergency Department policy.
  • Initiates ultrasound guided peripheral intravenous line access in accordance with the ‘Peripheral Intravenous Catheter Management Administrative Policy.” Must successfully complete initial training and competency from the Vascular Access Team Designee, and complete a yearly competency thereafter
  • Administer 0.9 Normal Saline IV flush for the insertion of peripheral intravenous lines.
  • Administer 0.9 Normal Saline push/pull boluses during trauma and resuscitations.
  • Maintains and applies cervical motion restriction, applies cervical collar, back board, Miami J products, and Kendrick Extrication Device
  • Applies prefabricated soft and rigid splints, including HARE traction
  • Assists with cast application
  • Maintains a clean, well-supplied patient care environment
  • Maintains equipment in working order
  • Assures availability of all life support equipment and medical gas for department operation.
  • Calibrates diagnostic and life support devices, e.g., ventilators, analyzers, and monitors.
  • Troubleshoots and performs equipment repairs within department guidelines.
  • Assembles equipment in preparation for patient use.
  • Processes equipment for cleaning/sterilization in accordance with the Hospitals infection control guidelines and stocks respiratory care equipment.
  • Replaces and maintains equipment set-ups in assigned areas according to department guidelines.
  • Ensures appropriate functioning of equipment through rotation for preventative maintenance and repair.
  • Sets up and maintains emergency standby equipment at patient’s bedside and/or designated areas.
  • Assess and document vital signs
  • ECG monitoring and 12-lead ECG application
  • Sp02 and ETCO2 monitoring
  • Administers general wound care, irrigation, cleansing and application of dressings. Ear irrigations
  • Assists members of the patient care team with procedures including but not limited to endo-tracheal intubation, lumbar puncture, laceration repair, wound incision and drainage, phlebotomy, peripheral intravenous insertion, intraosseous needle insertion
  • Provides patient and family education on the correct use of crutches, splints and other assistive devices
  • Performs Point of Care Testing: blood glucose, urine dip, urine HCG, rapid strep, Hemoccult®, Gastroccult®.
  • Transports and provides assessment, monitoring and documentation during patient and family transport to and from areas and services throughout the hospital.
  • Communicates assessments, interventions and patient status changes to patient care team
  • Documents assessments and interventions in the EMR
