About The Position

This job description is intended to identify some of the primary duties and responsibilities. Mayers Memorial Hospital District reserves the right to modify, supplement, delete or augment the duties and responsibilities specified in this position description, at MAYERS MEMORIAL HOSPITAL DISTRICT’S sole and absolute discretion. The Emergency Department Physician shall provide professional medical services as required for the diagnosis, treatment and efficient management of patients presenting to the hospitals emergency department for care and shall do so in a manner that is consistent with the prevailing standard of care, the requirements of the medical staff and the policies and procedures of MMHD.

Requirements

  • Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathy (DO) from an accredited medical school.
  • Valid California medical license with no restrictions
  • 4+ years of primary care experience
  • Professional behavior is demonstrated, both when on duty and as a representative of MMHD outside of normal work hours.
  • Ability to work with others, at all levels within the organization, and collaborate effectively.
  • Above-average interpersonal, problem-solving, and written and oral communication skills.
  • Independently manage tasks, identify challenges, and proactively find solutions.
  • A positive working relationship with patients, visitors, and facility staff is demonstrated.
  • Ensures all duties are completed entirely.

  • Maintains all information as confidential as appropriate, to include payroll, material produced for union negotiations, personnel information, and other information obtained while performing job duties that is confidential.

Nice To Haves

  • Board certification in Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, or related specialty is preferred
  • Experience in a rural or underservices setting is highly desirable

Responsibilities

  • Provide immediate, high-quality emergency medical care to patients presenting with acute illnesses and injuries.
  • Perform thorough assessments, establish diagnoses, and develop appropriate treatment plans.
  • Manage complex and time-sensitive cases, including trauma, cardiac emergencies, strokes and more.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, including nurses, specialists, and support staff, to ensure optimal patient outcomes.
  • Document clinical encounters accurately and efficiently in electronic health records to complete all charting/billing prior to leaving facility at shift end.
  • Facilitate appropriate transfer of patients when in need of higher level of care following EMTACA guidelines.
  • Admit patients to hospital after discussing with hospitalist and write initial orders if needed, as determined with discussion of admitting practitioner.
  • Educate patients and families about diagnoses, treatment options, follow up care plans as appropriate.
  • Maintain current certifications and stay updated on advances in emergency medicine.
  • Participates in peer chart review processes.
  • Lead and oversee the clinical operations of the emergency department, ensuring compliance with regulatory standards and hospital policies.
  • Develop, implement, and monitor protocols, policies, and quality improvement initiatives to enhance patient safety and care quality.
  • Provide clinical supervision, mentorship, and support to emergency department staff, including physicians, nurses, and ancillary personnel.
  • Responsible for provider scheduling, training, and performance evaluations in the emergency department.
  • Lead efforts in patient safety, risk management, and accreditation processes.
  • Facilitate effective communication between department staff and hospital administration.
  • Drive initiatives to improve patient flow, reduce wait times, and optimize resource utilization.
  • Participate in budget planning and resource allocation for the emergency department.
  • Represent the emergency department in hospital leadership meetings and strategic planning.
  • Responsible for formulating, overseeing and participating in peer/chart review.
