About The Position

The Emergency Department Coder at UChicago Medicine is responsible for coding and abstracting diagnoses and procedures from emergency department medical records to ensure optimal reimbursement and quality reporting. This remote position requires attention to detail and adherence to coding standards and regulations.

Requirements

  • Certification as a Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT), Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA), Certified Emergency Department Coder (CEDC), Certified Outpatient Coding (COC), Certified Professional Coder (CPC), Certified Coding Specialist Physician Based (CCS-P) or Certified Coding Specialist (CCS).
  • Skill in prioritizing and performing a variety of duties within a frequently changing environment.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to impart knowledge of procedures and techniques.
  • Thorough working knowledge of ICD-10-CM and CPT coding systems.
  • Knowledge of federal/state regulations regarding reimbursement.
  • Familiarity with hospital information systems and electronic medical record systems.
  • Understanding of medical-legal rules and regulations regarding confidentiality.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in emergency department coding or similar healthcare coding roles.

Responsibilities

  • Assign ICD-10-CM codes and CPT/HCPCS codes for emergency department medical record accounts.
  • Abstract key data elements required for billing and regulatory agencies.
  • Review records for clinical pertinence and documentation to support accurate facility-based charges.
  • Communicate with providers for clarification of documentation to ensure appropriate assignment of diagnoses and procedures.
  • Review and resolve claim edits related to emergency department encounters for compliant billing.
  • Assist with resolution of simple visit coding errors related to other outpatient visits as needed.
  • Perform qualitative analysis of records in accordance with regulatory standards and coding requirements.
  • Meet minimum acceptable standards for productivity and quality.
  • Maintain Continuing Education credits in accordance with certification requirements.
  • Demonstrate courtesy and professionalism in all interactions with hospital personnel and visitors.
  • Maintain patient confidentiality as required by policy and legal standards.
  • Support hospital-defined goals and approach to patient care.
  • Keep work area neat and clean and care for equipment.
