About the position

VEG Travel Veterinary Nurses complete heroic helping at high-need VEG Hospitals, regionally with an option for national assignment. We are Helping People and Their Pets When They Need it Most. VEG Travel Nurses are effective communicators, culture ambassadors, adept at working in new locations with new teams, yearning to travel frequently and aim for advanced nursing skills. They contribute as a team member to incoming outpatient care and ongoing inpatient care, aiding in managing patient care workload to ensure the patients are receiving uncompromised care.

Responsibilities

  • Spread the VEG way while providing gold-standard medicine to patients.
  • Arrive at VEG hospitals with a great attitude and encourage others to excel.
  • Share talents in advanced skills and cover shifts for hospitals with urgent needs.
  • Provide feedback to VEG leadership about concerns the hospital team may have.
  • Setup, support and restock procedural nursing tasks and techniques.
  • Infection control with facility support.
  • Preparation of laboratory samples including running benchtop analyzers.
  • Restraint and handling of non-compromised patients.
  • Filing prescriptions.
  • Perform nursing care tasks such as subcutaneous, intramuscular, and intravenous injections.
  • Ability to perform non-complicated radiologic imaging.
  • Skills in anesthesia including induction, maintenance, support and recovery of ASA I - III patients.
  • Identify major pharmacological drug families including drug calculations and formulary research.
  • Placement, care and troubleshooting of advanced catheters (urinary, nasogastric, nasal oxygen).
  • Ability to perform manual and kit-based blood typing and crossmatch including blood transfusions.
  • Clinical proficiency in management of ASA I - III cases with little oversight.
  • Advanced pharmacological understanding of drug classifications, categories and mathematical calculations including CRIs and drugs administered through microtitrations (syringe pump).
  • Nursing skills in the characterization and understanding of abnormal heart and lung sounds, pain status and mentations.
  • Advanced vascular access including intraosseous catheterization and central lines.
  • Able to support compromised anesthetic case management in ASA VI - V cases.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of experience in a veterinary technician role.
  • 2+ years experience in emergency.
  • AS or BS in Veterinary Technology, graduate from an AVMA Accredited Program.
  • Must have or have the ability to get CVT, LVT, LVMT, RVT, RVN as credentials in the state(s) of practice.
  • Veterinary technician specialist (VTS) certification is a plus and will lead to additional considerations in compensation.
  • Must be able to travel regionally and open to National travel (90/10% regional/national but can be up to 20% for short durations).
  • Must be flexible with scheduling and reliable to organize their own travel arrangements.
  • Basic computer skills to use practice management, electronic medical record, and collaboration software.
  • Ability to read, speak and hear sufficiently to understand, complete tasks instructed in all forms of communication, written, verbal, or other.
  • Provide information in person & over the phone communicating clearly, appropriately & professionally.
  • Properly communicates information to all personnel including management, medical staff & customers.
  • Fine motor skills adequate for utilizing hospital equipment necessary daily such as syringes, electric clippers, computers, surgery instruments, monitors, diagnostic equipment, etc.
  • Must be willing to work in a noisy environment with strong or unpleasant odors.
  • Ability to stand for prolonged hours, kneel, work on the floor as well as ability to lift up to 25 kg on own and able to support up to 40 kg with assistance.
  • Flexibility to work nights, weekends and Holidays.
  • Be able to work well in a fast-paced environment with all personality types.
  • Must have a valid US issued driver’s license and access to a vehicle for required regional travel needs.
