About The Position

The Emergency Department (ED) Charge RN is a vital leadership role within the ED, responsible for overseeing the daily operations, ensuring efficient patient flow, and maintaining the highest standards of patient care. The Charge RN coordinates nursing staff, collaborates with physicians and other healthcare professionals, and ensures that all Emergency Department policies and protocols are adhered to. This role requires strong clinical expertise, excellent communication skills, and the ability to make quick, informed decisions in a fast-paced environment.

Requirements

  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing; BSN preferred.
  • Possession of valid license to practice as an RN in the State of NV.
  • BLS for healthcare providers required
  • ACLS certification required
  • PALS certification required
  • 3-5 years of experience in clinical nursing with supervisory nursing experience preferred.
  • At least 2 years of recent ICU experience, ER experience preferred.
  • Knowledge of nursing principles and practices; hospital policies, procedures and routines; disease processes and treatment, including psychological, environmental and physical factors that influence a patient’s well-being.
  • Working knowledge of the laws and regulations governing patient care and medical center operations.
  • Ability to supervise the department in the provision of patient care; provide excellent and courteous customer service and establish and maintain effective working relationships.
  • The ability to establish priorities in solving unusual medical and administrative problems; facilitate communication between staff and administration.

Responsibilities

  • Demonstrates high level of nursing skill and leadership ability.
  • Facilitate effective communication between nursing staff, physicians, patients, and families.
  • Participate in staff meetings, case reviews, and departmental briefings.
  • Create a workplace environment where staff are working toward the same essential goals and strategies; provide two-way communication where ideas can be shared in a non-punitive environment.
  • Communicates in an effective and professional manner within all interactions with patients, visitors, physicians, nursing staff and all other employees of the medical center.
  • Serve as a liaison between the emergency department and other hospital departments.
  • Maintain accurate documentation and recordkeeping to support the day-to-day activities of the department.
  • Accurately documents shift staffing, patient assignments, staffing changes, etc.
  • Works with staff to ensure accuracy of documentation on events or incident reports which may be potential risk management issues.
  • Ensure that the emergency department operates efficiently, with optimal staffing levels and resource allocation.
  • Coordinate the admission, transfer, and discharge of patients, ensuring timely and appropriate transitions of care.
  • Monitor and manage inventory levels of medications, supplies, and equipment.
  • Respond to emergency situations and codes, coordinating the response team as needed.
  • Demonstrates problem solving skills to manage surges and MCI's, acting as incident commander until administration arrives.
  • Complies with EMTALA and ensures that documentation is present supporting the planning process for discharges and transfers.
  • Maintains standards of nursing care and implements department policies and procedures.
  • Assists nursing staff with developing independent problem-solving capabilities.
  • Stays up to date on current best practice and nursing standards of care.
  • Acts as a resource for staff implementation when providing patient care.
  • Actively participates in Quality Assurance/Improvement and assists with implementation and evaluation of improvement action plan.
  • Forwards issues to appropriate department manager in a timely manner.
  • Assists with follow-up to occurrence reports and medication events.
  • Utilizes the chain of command to quickly resolve issues.
  • Documents concerns as needed to promote follow-up.
  • Monitor patient care activities to ensure adherence to established protocols and standards.
  • Assist in triaging patients, prioritizing care based on acuity and resource availability.
  • Address and resolve any patient care issues or concerns that arise during the shift.
  • Collaborate with physicians, advanced practice providers, and other healthcare team members to develop and implement patient care plans.
  • Assist with training of staff and overseeing validation of staff’s competencies as directed by department manager.
  • Assists with employee performance evaluations if requested by Department Manager.
  • Assists with appropriate and safe staffing levels based on current acuities.
  • Provides coverage for vacant positions and for break relief.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for nursing staff during the assigned shift.
  • Assign nursing staff to patients based on acuity levels and nursing competencies.
  • Provide guidance, support, and mentoring to nursing staff, promoting professional growth and development.
  • Conduct shift handoff reports, ensuring continuity of care.
