At Meta's Reality Labs Research, our goal is to make world-class consumer augmented and mixed reality experiences. Come work alongside industry-leading scientists and engineers to create the technology that makes mixed reality (MR) and augmented reality (AR) pervasive and universal. Join the adventure of a lifetime as we make science fiction real and change the world. In this role, you will become part of a team with academic researchers and scientists that are delving into cognitive development, novel human computer interfaces, AI, and perceptual science. Responsibilities include design, build and verification of firmware for hardware devices used by in-house and external researchers as part of this mission. To achieve this you'll collaborate with research scientists, mechanical and electrical engineers, and other software engineers. Our team embraces ambiguity and nurtures a sense of ownership. Join us as we work together to advance the future of mixed and augmented reality.

  • Contribute effort to analyze, design, develop, and debug firmware, and embedded software.
  • Understand and implement firmware on micro-controllers and SoCs, leverage peripherals, manage power consumption, support boot loaders, and schedule real-time tasks (RTOS).
  • Collaborate in a team environment across multiple, research focused, and engineering disciplines, making the architectural tradeoffs required to rapidly deliver firmware solutions.
  • Support all phases of custom hardware and research test-vehicle development - including early architecture requirements definition, firmware and embedded system architecture, proof-of-concept implementation, selection of MCUs and tools, and board bring-up.
  • Understand and drive implementation of embedded software development good practices across teams and projects, including setting expectations, defining backlog, and tracking progress of cross-functional partners.
  • Document and communicate learning, understanding, and problem solving to a wide range of audiences and disciplines. Communicate with external academic partners as needed.
  • 5+ years of experience in embedded software development
  • Experience with embedded software design and programming in C and C++, including the full life cycle of continuous integration through release and updates.
  • Experience with building drivers for custom hardware systems
  • Experience with synchronous and asynchronous serial protocols (e.g. I2C, I3C, SPI, USB)
  • Experience in the use of oscilloscopes, logic analyzers and protocol decoders
  • Experience with designing a firmware solution from hardware components or datasheets
  • Experience with register level and system debugging
  • Proven track record of success in solving complex technical problems with breadth and depth, critical thinking and decision-making
  • Effective teamwork, collaborative, and cross-team communication skills
  • Experience working effectively with cross-functional partners in mechanical and electrical engineering
  • Experience working in a research environment
  • $147,000/year to $208,000/year + bonus + equity + benefits
  • Individual compensation is determined by skills, qualifications, experience, and location.
  • In addition to base compensation, Meta offers benefits.
