Zymo Research is looking for a dynamic individual to join our Engineering Team! The Embedded Mechatronics Engineer will design, implement, and optimize embedded motor-control systems for complex mechatronic platforms. This role focuses on real-time motion control, firmware development, electronics integration, and close collaboration with mechanical, electrical, and software teams to deliver reliable, high-performance motion solutions. Join us in making a meaningful impact!

  • Design, implement, and tune motion-control algorithms (including PID) for multi-motor systems (stepper, BLDC, servo).
  • Develop embedded firmware in C/C++ and Python for real-time control on MCU/RTOS platforms.
  • Select and integrate microcontrollers and peripherals (timers, PWMs, UART/I2C/SPI, memory) based on system requirements.
  • Implement and debug communication interfaces (UART, CAN, I2C, SPI, USB) between controllers and modules.
  • Collaborate on PCB-level design, grounding, power distribution, and EMI/EMC mitigation for high-current motor systems.
  • Integrate and condition signals from sensors (encoders, limit switches, optical sensors) with appropriate filtering.
  • Implement safety features: fault detection, watchdogs, overcurrent protection, and interlocks.
  • Use oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and in-circuit debuggers for bring-up, validation, and troubleshooting.
  • Create and maintain technical documentation: architecture diagrams, firmware specs, test plans, and V&V protocols.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, Robotics, Mechanical Engineering with a strong controls focus, or a related field required.
  • 3+ years of hands-on experience in embedded firmware development for motion-control or mechatronic systems (5+ years preferred for senior-level consideration).
  • Strong understanding of control theory, motion control, and PID tuning for precision motion systems.
  • Proven experience with RTOS, deterministic timing, and interrupt-driven control loops.
  • Working knowledge of motor drivers (e.g., TMC series), microstepping, torque profiles, and current control.
  • Experience with PCB design principles, hardware–software co-design, and electronics debugging.
  • Familiarity with reliability practices (FMEA, DFM/DFT) and designing for robust, manufacturable systems.
  • Strong cross-functional collaboration skills and ability to communicate clearly with mechanical, electrical, and software teams.
  • Master’s degree in a related discipline is a plus.
  • 5+ years preferred for senior-level consideration
  • Medical, Dental, Vision, and Life Insurance Coverages
  • EAP Sessions
  • Vacation Time plus Company Holidays
  • Paid Sick Leave
  • Generous 401(K) with matching
  • Employee Referral Bonus
  • Complimentary fruit, snacks, and beverages
