The Embedded Electronics Engineering Scientist position at Applied Research Laboratories involves hardware and firmware design for the Advanced Technology Laboratory (ATL). The role requires designing embedded electronics hardware, developing real-time embedded software applications, creating supporting documentation, participating in data collection and analysis, and supporting equipment installation and testing in field locations.

  • Design embedded electronics hardware containing microcontrollers, A/D converters, power supplies, etc.; including schematics, board layout, fabrication, and troubleshooting.
  • Design, develop, and test real-time embedded software applications under various operating systems including Linux and Android.
  • Create supporting documentation for hardware and software designed to support ATL projects.
  • Participate in data collection exercises, data management, and data analysis.
  • Support the installation and testing of equipment in field locations.
  • Other related functions, as assigned.
  • Bachelor's degree in engineering, computer or information science, or other applied sciences.
  • Three years of related experience including experience in designing digital and analog electronics hardware and developing software applications in an embedded environment.
  • Highly organized with excellent attention to detail and sound scientific judgment.
  • Ability to manage time effectively and execute multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • US Citizen with eligibility for access to classified information.
  • Five or more years experience in the development of electrical engineering, test or production systems.
  • Experience with implementation of compact battery operated equipment utilizing both analog and digital circuitry.
  • Experience in design synthesis utilizing programmable logic and embedded processors with programmable logic devices.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of CAD tools including SPICE, PowerLogic, PowerPCB, design tools for Xilinx and Altera programmable logic devices, VisualDSP++, Cross Core, IAR Embedded Workbench and Code Composer Studio.
  • Demonstrated knowledge in any of the following: C, C++, Java, Android, Linux, real time operating systems, version control systems, defect tracking systems, unit testing.
  • Demonstrated knowledge in one or more of the following areas: acoustics, signal processing, detection theory, pattern recognition and classification, image processing, radio communications.
  • Prior work experience in professional or research oriented software development.
