About The Position

The Elementary Student Support Facilitator serves as a crucial liaison between the school, families, and the community. This role involves working directly with students, parents, and school staff to address personal and social concerns, intervening in cases of excessive absenteeism and truancy. The facilitator collaborates with external agencies like the Department of Social Services, provides support and educational opportunities for parents to enhance communication with school staff, and helps orient students to new situations. Key duties also include consulting with various stakeholders regarding student needs, facilitating social skills or school success lessons, conducting home visits, assisting with academic recovery, and reporting suspected child abuse or neglect. The position requires attendance at meetings and preparation of reports.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in social work, counseling, or teaching from an approved preparation program.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication, strategic planning, problem solving, organizational, time management, and conflict resolution skills.
  • Computer proficiency in word processing, spreadsheets, data entry, email, and internet.
  • Ability to keep information confidential.

Nice To Haves

  • Current/valid South Dakota Social Worker, Counselor or Teacher Certificate preferred.
  • Previous experience in school setting preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Serves as a liaison between school, family, and community.

  • Consults with teachers, staff, parents, and other significant people regarding the needs of students.
  • Facilitates individual or small group lessons on social skills or school success activities.
  • Conducts home visits.
  • Assists with academic recovery.
  • Reports suspected child abuse/neglect.
  • Attends required meetings.
  • Prepares reports as required.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
