Serves as the administrative leader and primary instructional leader of the building. Provides instructional leadership to staff through professional learning, coaching, curriculum planning, review, and implementation; supervises and evaluates staff; and analyzes multiple sources of data to inform decision making and continuous improvement. Responsible for the day-to-day buildings and grounds administration, activities, and the safety and welfare of all assigned staff and enrolled students. Ensures a school environment that is physically, socially, and emotionally safe for students and staff and that recognizes and fosters diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging for all students. Oversees all school programs in the building, including special education and related services, ensuring compliance with federal and state mandates.

Requirements

  • Master's Degree required.
  • Five (5) or more years experience in teaching and administration, preferably at the elementary level.
  • Valid Vermont Teaching License with appropriate level endorsement and Administrator certificate.
  • Personal computer, word processing, database, internet, and spreadsheet skills.
  • Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory in a specific field.
  • A demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff, and the community is essential.
  • Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and School Board policies are also required.
  • Demonstrated ongoing commitment to workplace diversity, sustainability, and delivering exceptional customer service is essential.

Responsibilities

  • Serves as the administrative building leader by: Implementing policy and procedure changes as directed by the Superintendent or by State and/or Federal mandates.
  • Ensures compliance with Federal and State Programs.
  • Ensuring alignment and implementation with the district's strategic plan, MTSS implementation, and grant-funded school improvement plans in collaboration with the EDLSS.
  • Working collaboratively with MTSS instructional leaders to implement Tiered practices and PD.
  • Prepares the school budget in consultation with the Business Manager.
  • Monitors expenditures of the funds allocated ensuring that the school is run efficiently, on budget, and with a direct link to the educational goals of the district.
  • Works with Central Office personnel to coordinate processes for the effective functioning of the school.
  • Maintains accurate records as required by Federal, State and local officials.
  • Works with the Director of Learning and Student Services to coordinate the annual assessment calendar.
  • Oversees all remedial and special services within the school, including special education, Section 504, and related services, in consultation with the Director of Learning and Student Services.
  • Ensures implementation of IEPs and other plans, adherence to required timelines and due process, and compliance with all federal and state special education mandates; ultimate accountability for special education compliance within the building rests with the Principal.
  • Leads processes that assure students’ attendance, achievement, growth and development including, but not limited to: student evaluation, student conduct, reporting, standardized testing, maintenance and transfer of records.
  • Assists with capital improvement projects in consultation with the Business Manager.
  • Manages building level curriculum and instruction by: Establishing priorities for educational materials and supervising the selection and evaluation of instructional materials to meet the needs of students and teachers with allowable anticipated funds.
  • Leading building level improvements of the total educational program.
  • Implementing and monitoring the district-approved curriculum at the building level.
  • Maintaining cohesive educational programs with the middle/high school and in conjunction with the Director of Learning and Support Services.
  • Serving as the building’s primary instructional leader by providing training, coaching, and feedback; leading professional learning communities/teams; and ensuring consistent implementation of district-approved curriculum, instructional practices, and assessment expectations.
  • Analyzing student learning, growth, attendance, behavior, and other relevant data (including disaggregated data) to identify trends and equity gaps; using findings to inform school improvement planning, decision making, and allocation of staff and resources.
  • Supervises and directs all personnel assigned to the building in their activities related to the safe, orderly operation of the school and ensures a positive school climate by: Managing assigned building level personnel issues and concerns.
  • Recruiting, hiring, evaluating, and terminating, as appropriate, professional, support staff, and substitutes within the building in consultation with the Superintendent/designee.
  • Makes hiring recommendations, of final candidates, to the Superintendent/Designee.
  • Assigning teachers to classrooms and students to classes.
  • Plans programs, schedules, and assignment of teacher duties.
  • Evaluating performance and effectiveness of programs and staff.
  • Coordinates in-service training for staff.
  • Creating and sustaining a school climate that is physically, socially, and emotionally safe, including prevention of and response to bullying, harassment, and discrimination, and promoting practices that advance diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging for all students.
  • Serves as the School Community/Relations Manager by: Maintaining and promoting relationships with students, staff, parents/guardians, volunteers, support groups, and outside agencies.
  • Interacting with students in a constructive manner to encourage individuals to perform at their highest level.
  • Participating in district-wide activities, in-service programs, and committees as appropriate.
  • Recognizing accomplishments and achievements of students and staff.
  • In conjunction with the Superintendent, communicates the school’s program and accomplishments to the community.
  • Maintains professional development for self and assigned staff by: Developing annual staff development plans and in-service training in consultation with the Superintendent/Designee to include any and all state and federal mandates of law including, but not limited to: sexual harassment, confidentiality, and Act 1.
  • Approving all professional development workshops, leaves, and other activities in accordance with school and individual staff development plans and in consultation with the Director of Learning.
  • Maintaining current information on legal/financial developments of educational legislative reforms.
  • Remaining current on educational/school administration issues with which appropriate licensure may be maintained.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned by the Superintendent.
