About The Position

The Elementary Music Teacher provides high-quality, developmentally appropriate music instruction to students in grades PK–3. This position fosters musical literacy, creativity, and performance skills while preparing students for advanced instrumental pathways including piano, string instruments, and the school’s future bagpipe program. The teacher designs engaging lessons aligned to state standards and the school’s Fine Arts vision, ensuring that all students, regardless of ability level, develop a strong foundation in music.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Music Education or related field (required).
  • Valid teaching certification in Music (EC–12 or appropriate level).
  • Strong knowledge of elementary music pedagogy, music literacy development, and recorder instruction.
  • Experience teaching beginning music theory and preparing students for instrumental pathways preferred.
  • Ability to inspire a love of music and adapt instruction to meet varied learning needs.

Responsibilities

  • Teach general music classes using appropriate age practices in singing, movement, listening, and musical expression.
  • Teach recorder as a foundational instrument to build breath control, finger dexterity, notation reading, and ensemble discipline.
  • Provide clear instruction in beginning music theory and core musical concepts (notation, rhythm, pitch, dynamics, musical forms) appropriate to grade level and skill level.
  • Develop lessons that intentionally prepare and transition students into the school’s piano, string instruments, and a future bagpipe programs, introducing fundamental skills needed for each pathway.
  • Incorporate a variety of instructional methods—instrumental practice, vocal activities, kinesthetic learning, solfège, and music technology—to support diverse learners.
  • Create a positive, inclusive learning environment that encourages creativity, curiosity, and student confidence.
  • Assess student progress through formative and summative measures; use data to adjust instruction and identify students ready for advanced programs.
  • Provide opportunities for individual and ensemble performance, including concerts, showcases, assemblies, and special events.
  • Establish clear expectations, routines, and procedures for music classrooms and performance spaces.
  • Model and reinforce schoolwide character, behavior, and engagement expectations.
  • Communicate regularly with parents, administrators, and colleagues regarding student progress and upcoming performances.
  • Participate in schoolwide events, professional development, and faculty meetings.
  • Uphold district policies, safety practices, and all requirements related to student supervision.
