About The Position

Des Moines Public Schools is seeking qualified applicants for the 26-27 school year to serve as an ELL Teacher. This position will start in August 2026. Any ELL endorsed applicant (K-12) is encouraged to apply. This position is .5 at Carver Elementary and .5 at Jackson Elementary. Please note: The posted salary is drawn from the 25-26 Salary Schedule as the 26-27 Salary Schedule is not yet final. TITLE: K-12 ELL Teacher POSTION TYPE: TCHR HIRING SPECIFICATIONS: Required: Valid Iowa teaching license with ELL endorsement. Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities: Ability to speak a second language other than English, preferable a high needs language of DMPS students. Knowledge of subject, curriculum, and effective teaching methods. Effective communication both oral and written. BASIC FUNCTION: Responsible for planning and delivering a high-quality educational program to meet children’s academic and social-emotional needs. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Deliver daily lessons, aligned to state and district standards, that meet students’ individual needs and ensure growth in the areas of speaking, listening, reading and writing English and study skills. Establish and maintain standards of student behavior needed to achieve learning. Participate in building and district professional learning communities to plan for instruction, analyze data, and create assessments. Assist in placement of ELL students in appropriate level classes. Monitor student learning on a daily basis. Use multiple data points to guide and individualize instruction. Maintain and monitor individual ELL portfolios. Collaborate with ELL staff to implement testing procedures and report results to district ELL staff. Coordinate instruction and student needs with content area teachers. Collaborate with building administrator to provide effective scheduling for ELL students. Work with curriculum department to select appropriate instructional materials Communicate with families on a regular basis. Participate in professional development. Demonstrate consistent progress on meeting the eight Iowa Teaching Standards ADDITIONAL ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS (for every DMPS position): Attend work on a prompt and regular basis. Maintain confidentiality. Maintain satisfactory and harmonious working relationships with the public, students, and other employees. Assist with other duties as may be assigned.
