About The Position

The job of Counselor includes providing support to students in the instructional process with specific responsibility for providing course curriculum, information and recommendations to students and parents; and assisting in the development of goals and plans for achievement. School counselors are responsible to implement a comprehensive school counseling program based on district goals and objectives. They will assist in the development, implementation and maintenance of a school’s counseling and guidance program to meet the individual and diverse needs of all students through individual planning, guidance curriculum, and responsive services.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college/university, or will complete a bachelor degree program prior to the contract start date.
  • Valid State of Utah Professional School Counselor License, a valid Utah Associate School Counselor License, a valid out of state School Counseling license that will transfer to Utah, or will complete a School Counseling program prior to the contract start date that will lead to a Professional Utah School Counselor license.
  • Professional communication skills including, but not limited to: excellent written and verbal communications skills; confident, articulate and professional speaking abilities; and emphatic listening and persuasive speaking skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Spanish Speaker: speaks, reads, writes, and understands spoken Spanish.
  • Have an ESL endorsement or will obtain one within 4 years of hire.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinates and collaborates with teachers and other personnel, resource specialists and/or community (e.g. Courts, child protective services, etc.) for the purpose of providing/receiving requested information and/or making recommendations.
  • Counsels students, parents, and guardians to enhance student success in school.
  • Develops a variety of programs for providing information to assist students in difficult situations and successful school transitions.
  • Monitors students' progress for the purpose of identifying issues and taking appropriate action for increasing student success.
  • Participates in meetings, workshops and seminars as assigned for the purpose of conveying and/or gathering information required to perform functions.
  • Prepares a wide variety of materials (e.g. quantity reports, student activities, correspondence, audits, etc.) for the purpose of documenting activities, providing written reference, and/or conveying information.
  • Presents information (e.g. budget overviews, accounting processes, distribution formulas, etc.) for the purpose of communicating information, gaining feedback and ensuring adherence to established internal controls.
  • Schedules student classes for the purpose of securing appropriate placement and meeting school, district, and/or State requirements.
  • Supervises assigned programs (e.g. peer counseling, special education, ESL, etc.) to monitor performance, provide for professional growth and achieve overall curriculum implementation.
  • Performs essential duties and responsibilities efficiently, accurately and safely, with or without reasonable accommodation, and without posing a threat of harm to self or others.
  • Attendance: Must maintain regular and acceptable attendance at such level as is determined in the employer’s sole discretion.
  • Is responsible for compliance with federal and state laws, State Board of Education administrative rules, state assessment polices, Salt Lake City School District board policies and supervisory directives.
  • Is responsible for compliance with all requirements of State Board of Education Rule R277-330 Utah Effective Educator Standards at all levels to teacher development.
  • Is responsible for compliance with all requirements of State Board of Education Rule R277-301 Educator Licensing.
  • Maintain professional workplace etiquette and represents the department/district in a professional manner; communicate effectively and efficiently with diverse groups of people while maintaining confidentiality and positive working relationships with co-workers, students, parents, and other district employees.
  • Demonstrates adaptability and understanding of cultural differences in working in a diverse environment while coping with stressful situations related to students and maintaining confidentiality.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned or required.
