The Elementary Classroom Teacher is responsible for instructing pupils in various subjects including reading, language arts, social studies, mathematics, science, art, health, physical education, and music, utilizing the course of study adopted by the Board of Education. This role involves teaching citizenship and basic subject matter as specified by state law and school district regulations. The teacher develops lesson plans and instructional materials, providing individualized and small group instruction to adapt the curriculum to meet the diverse needs of each pupil. A key aspect of the position is establishing and maintaining standards of pupil behavior to foster a functional learning atmosphere. The teacher evaluates pupils' academic and social growth, maintains appropriate records, and prepares progress reports. Communication with parents through conferences and other means is essential to discuss pupil progress and interpret school programs. The teacher identifies pupil needs and collaborates with other professional staff to assess and address health, attitude, and learning problems. Creating an effective learning environment through functional and attractive displays, bulletin boards, and interest centers is also part of the role. Professional competence is maintained through district-provided in-service educational activities and self-selected professional growth. The teacher selects and requisitions books and instructional aids, maintains inventory records, and supervises pupils in out-of-classroom activities during the assigned working day. Administration of group standardized tests in accordance with district and state programs is required. Participation in curriculum development programs, faculty committees, and sponsorship of pupil activities is expected. The teacher develops and uses instructional material suitable for verbal or visual instruction for pupils with a wide range of mental, physical, and emotional maturities, providing individual and group instruction to help pupils make a satisfactory transition to school. Timely completion of all paperwork, district, and state education forms is mandatory. The teacher must implement students' individualized educational plans (IEP) by providing modifications and adaptations. Other duties may be assigned by the administrator. In the event of a health crisis or disruptive situation requiring school closure, remote work may be necessary, with eligibility and guidelines determined by the superintendent and supervisor.
