About The Position

At Breakthrough Academy, a new Missouri Charter School located at Operation Breakthrough, Counselors are essential to ensuring that all of our students succeed academically and build strong social-emotional skills. Counselors will assist teachers in building inclusive classroom communities (through the use of Conscious Discipline) where students feel safe, valued, and empowered to learn every day. While here, you’ll belong to a team of passionate professionals who are dedicated to our mission of helping urban Kansas City children reach their greatest potential. The OB Elementary School Counselor provides counseling services to students to support their academic, social, and emotional development. This role involves collaborating with teachers, parents, and administrators to create a positive and inclusive school environment.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree with State of Missouri School Counselor Certification
  • Strong counseling skills to address students' academic, personal, and social needs.
  • Effective communication skills for interacting with students, parents, and school staff including strong oral and written communication skill
  • Cultural Sensitivity to enable effective communication with students from various cultural backgrounds.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills
  • Ability to identify and address student problems effectively.
  • Ability to act as an advocate for students

Responsibilities

  • Provide individual and group counseling to students to address academic, personal, and social issues.
  • Deliver whole class lessons aligned to grade level expectations in the areas of social/emotional development, academic development, and career development
  • Assist students in developing problem-solving and decision-making skills.
  • Collaborate with teachers to identify and address academic challenges faced by students.
  • Conduct academic assessments and help students set educational goals.
  • Support students in developing positive relationships with peers and adults.
  • Help facilitate school initiatives that promote Conscious Discipline
  • Provide Tiered counseling supports and interventions to help students acquire and develop missing skills.
  • Respond to and manage crises or emergencies affecting students.
  • Collaborate with other school staff and external resources to provide immediate support.
  • Participate in IEP meetings and collaborate with special education teams to support students with special needs.
  • Work closely with parents to address concerns about their child's academic, social, or emotional well-being.
  • Collaborate with teachers to implement strategies that support student success.
  • Provide PD for staff and parents as needed.
  • Conduct classroom guidance lessons on bullying prevention, digital literacy, study skills, and conflict resolution.
  • Provide information to students on academic and career planning.
  • Introduce students to basic concepts of career exploration and planning.
  • Provide information about educational and vocational opportunities.
