About The Position

Under the direction of the Administrative Officer, the Electronics Technician works closely with the Chief Electronics Technician to support the day-to-day operations for the Department of Chemistry’s Electronics Shop. This involves keeping records and accounts up to date, and researching and planning maintenance, repairs, designs, and installations of laboratory instrumentation located throughout the Department of Chemistry and its McGill Chemistry Characterization (MC2) facilities. This position requires working on-site Monday to Friday.

Requirements

  • Bilingual; excellent verbal and written communication skills, in both English and French.
  • Ability to maintain, modify, design troubleshoot, and repair electronic and electrical equipment, laboratory instruments and appliances.
  • Ability to use the following apparatus/equipment/tools: Multimeter, Oscilloscope, Spectrum Analyzer, Bench power supply, Signal generator, Capacitance/Inductance meter, Soldering equipment (some surface mount), Hand tools.
  • Must be service-oriented with the ability to take initiative, be resourceful, and assist users.
  • Experience in a teaching or research laboratory setting and knowledge of safety rules.
  • Detail-oriented with strong organizational skills and the ability to prioritize, multitask, and solve problems.
  • Excellent communication skills with ability to work with internal and external stakeholders.
  • High level of proficiency with MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, Access, Outlook), Windows.

  • 4 Years Related Experience

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of Linux/ Python would be an asset.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain equipment, keep records and files of work done.
  • Perform repairs on all equipment and machinery or arranges for servicing.
  • Purchase electrical components as required.
  • Assemble and install electronic devices.
  • Develop, design and build electronic and electrical circuitry for installation.
  • Modify and install various machines or circuits in support of experiments and for new laboratory set-ups.
  • Draw plans, sketches, and write technical documents dealing with electronic function for the purpose of troubleshooting, installing or improving electronic systems. Proceed with execution as required.
  • Participate in the delivery and installation of major new equipment in department and in researchers’ labs.
  • Devise, modify or build assemblies by interfacing electronic devices with mechanical components for control and measuring purposes. Conduct required testing.
  • Assemble, from plans, electrical circuits, electronic equipment and networks; install required cabling and connections.
  • Act as resource person, resolve problems and instruct others.
  • Ensure the proper use of equipment and that safety procedures are followed.
  • Participate in projects and experiments in the field of electronics, instrumentation and electrodynamics. Discuss needs and technical demands of the projects. Research to find solutions to problems.
  • Keep abreast of new developments in the field to update skills and knowledge.
  • Use equipment such as computers, audio-visual equipment, oscilloscopes, voltage regulators, probes, soldering equipment, drills and power tools.
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned, such as training students on how to use equipment.
