About The Position

The National Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRAO) is seeking an Electronics Engineer II-III to contribute to the development, production, and maintenance of advanced analog, digital, and photonic front-ends for radio telescopes. This role involves working with high-frequency techniques and requires a solid background in RF engineering, microwave test and measurement, and circuit design. The position is based at the Central Development Lab in Charlottesville, VA, which is known for its innovative technology in radio astronomy research.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering.
  • Minimum of one year to three years of experience in a related field or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Course or work experience in RF engineering and digital design.
  • Background in high-frequency techniques, electromagnetic simulation, and microwave test and measurement.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with monolithic microwave integrated circuit (MMIC) design and circuit board layout.
  • Knowledge of RF theory and digital design.
  • Familiarity with multi-meters, oscilloscopes, spectrum analyzers, and network analyzers.

Responsibilities

  • Testing and evaluating RF components and subsystems used in integrated front ends for receivers.
  • Analyzing signal path performance (e.g., noise and linearity) and highlighting areas for improvement.
  • Working with a technician to assemble and test completed front ends for receivers.
  • Collaborating with a research engineer to evaluate measurements and improve performance of receiver front end modules and design future versions.
  • Updating mechanical drawings, schematics, and circuit boards to implement changes and corrections to existing designs.
  • Documenting designs, test results, problems encountered, and solutions implemented.
