About The Position

Works with and assists full time equipment maintenance employees to perform preventative maintenance and repairs on all equipment mechanical and electrical systems. A trainee will learn to perform trouble shooting, testing, disassembly, inspecting, repair and re-assembly of plant mechanical and electrical equipment, systems and components. Incumbent assists with the replacement and/or adjustment of mechanical clutches, drive trains, and assist in major and general repairs on all equipment. Trainee assists installing of distribution equipment including switch gear, I lines, bus ways, gutters, disconnects, conduits and cables in accordance with National Electrical Code. Incumbent performs minor electrical functions which include installation and repair of lighting, repair of small fixtures, appliances, welders, wire feeds and motors, changing fuses and general house cleaning. Will perform required fabrication of fixtures including welding, cutting, brazing and surface applications. Required to record labor and material used on each repair made. Required to take proper care in the use and maintenance of equipment. Will operate lift equipment including cranes, booms, lifts, cherry picker, forklift, etc. Exercise communication skills pertaining to the job. Reports all abnormal conditions and safety hazard to Supervisor.

Requirements

A High School Diploma or GED equivalent
Must be enrolled in an Electrical or Electromechanical Technology or an Associate’s degree program
The ability to climb and work at elevated heights of up to eighty feet
Basic understanding of electrical, electronic, hydraulic, pneumatic, & mechanical schematics and terminology
Basic understanding of rigging principles and methods
The ability to accurately interpret electrical schematics, blueprints and National Electrical Code books for both AC & DC electrical systems
The ability to read and understand hydraulic and pneumatic valves and prints
A working knowledge of using e-mail

Ability to operate a forklift
Experience welding and fabricating
Experience with pneumatic, hydraulic, and mechanical troubleshooting
Experience with low-voltage electrical / electronic troubleshooting

Responsibilities

Assist and learn how to troubleshoot Electrical and electronic as well as hydraulic & pneumatic troubleshooting should progressively get better
Assist and learn tier 1 level skills such as dropping power to a machine, replacing proximity switches, replacing a hydraulic pump, replacing a hydraulic or pneumatic cylinder, or installing a Hoffman box with PLC
Assist and learn how to evaluate whether the installation of low voltage electrical equipment meets National Electrical Codes, OSHA and Valmont Safety Standards
Assist and learn tier 1 skills such as troubleshooting electronic, electrical, & mechanical systems that do require considerable judgment although final diagnostic of a problem is not normally done by a tier 1 technician
Ability to advance to Electromechanical Tech 1 and able to decide whether or not equipment can run or needs immediate attention for repairs
Responsible for hand tools, electrical tools, volt/ohm and amp meters and other testing equipment, welders, including transportation equipment and lifting equipment
Responsible to maintain the work area in a safe condition
Pre-use checklists will be filled out by the employee for forklifts and other material handling equipment.
Lockout/tagout procedures are mandatory
Employee operates as a member of the team, but not as a lead
